Romano: Maldini in talks over new director role after Milan exit

By Oliver Fisher -

Paolo Maldini left AC Milan five months ago now, and he might be about to start a new chapter in Saudi Arabia given he has a job offer there.

The surprise retirement of Zlatan Ibrahimovic after the final match of 2022-23 was an emotional curtain call after a rollercoaster campaign. However, it became apparent within 48 hours of that win against Verona that club icon Maldini and his right-hand man Ricky Massara were being relieved of their duties as the technical and sporting director, plunging the project into disrepute.

There were all kinds of destabilising rumours that followed with suggestions that the dressing room did not take the news well and that Maldini wanted to replace Stefano Pioli with Andrea Pirlo, among other things.

A new management was formed comprising of CEO Giorgio Furlani, chief scout Geoffrey Moncada and sporting director Antonio D’Ottavio, while Maldini’s future remained a mystery.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Maldini is now the main candidate to become new Al Ittihad director in what would be a new chapter in Saudi Pro League. He is set to decide his future soon with Al Ittihad – who recently fired Nuno Espirito Santo as head coach – a serious possibility being considered.

  1. A figure like Paolo Maldini in Milan is really needed. Its a shame we lost him. This new management proved that they know nothing about Football and the importance of a figure in a club.
And who cares more about Milan that Maldini.
