RR: Leao’s will made the difference during renewal talks – the background

By Oliver Fisher -

Rafael Leao committed his future to AC Milan last year by signing a multi-year renewal, and some information has emerged regarding the day he penned the deal.

According to what is being reported by Radio Rossonera, there are many questions surrounding Leao’s future amid the links with PSG, but what must be underline is that the importance of the Portuguese’s will during the time of his renewal with Milan.

What happened on 2 June 2023 tells the story of the person Leao beyond the footballer. The negotiation was complex: the dispute with Sporting CP and Lille and a power of attorney that saw many actors on stage made it unique.

Over the months there were many meetings but, at the end of these, when the point of signing was expected, there was always further issues to overcome. They were not of Leao’s creation, though.

The only one who never wavered was the winger, so much so that on the day of signing he initially went on his own to Casa Milan, then later joined by his family and entourage.

He wanted to sign with the Rossoneri out of gratitude, highlighting his strong will, perhaps even going against the many people close to him who might have advised him differently.

Despite very high salary offers from other teams, if he had left for free, Leao thought it was the right growth step to stay at Milan, which is why in the negotiations for his renewal his will made the difference.

Many didn’t believe that a renewal was possible, but he chose Milan and the good of the club, extending until 2028.

  1. HAs anyone asked Rafa if he is even interested in the PSG move if they come for him? He would not get the tactical “flexibility” that he has here in any other club that can afford him.

He doesn’t track back after losing the ball in the final third, see how long he plays after that. LOL!!!
