AC Milan's Belgian midfielder Charles De Ketelaere

Sacchi makes Inter the Supercoppa favourites and assesses Milan’s recent issues

Former AC Milan boss Arrigo Sacchi has had his say on the enigma that is Charles De Ketelaere and also branded Inter as the favourites for the upcoming Supercoppa Italiana clash.

Interviewed by La Gazzetta dello Sport, Sacchi began by discussing the game coming up against the Nerazzurri in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday night which will see the two teams play a game to decide a trophy for the first time in over a decade.

“Inter doesn’t have a plot, it’s mainly tactics. In the match against Verona, after the goal, it was humiliating for players and fans. Milan invested less than Inter and performed a miracle last year. Now, however, he is confronted with the precariousness of success: when you win unexpectedly you think you have arrived,” Sacchi said (via SempreMilan.it).

“It’s important to both teams. Inter are favourites, while Milan can only do it if they find humility and balance. The challenge on the bench? Inzaghi is in all respects a tactician. Pioli was, but he has evolved, he has become a strategist.”

Milan have not had a great start to 2023 having won just one of their opening four games and that comes after a worrying performance in the December friendlies where Arsenal, Liverpool and PSV beat the Rossoneri rather comfortably.

“The team is no longer a collective, there’s an excess of protagonism: they stretch too much and the strikers struggle. But we can ask less of Milan than the others.”

Milan’s 2022 summer transfer window has come under fire from sections of the media with accusations that the squad is now weaker, and De Ketelaere is perhaps the symbol of that given his struggles.

On the Belgian, Sacchi said: “He enters the field almost like an underdog. Confused and afraid. However, this is not the time to give definitive sentences.”
