Saelemaekers says winning trophies is ‘important’ for Milan and discusses Scudetto hopes

By Isak Möller -

Alexis Saelemaekers has featured in every single game for AC Milan this season but it hasn’t always been perfect for the Belgian. In fact, in recent weeks, Junior Messias has leapfrogged him in the pecking order.

It’s very impressive that the 22-year-old hasn’t missed a single game but, having said that, his output has been just two goals and three assists. And that’s one of the reasons why Messias has been chosen ahead of him lately.

In an interview with Mediaset, as cited by MilanNews, Saelemaekers spoke about Milan’s slip-up against Salernitana and what that means for their season. He assured that they still have their eyes set on the Scudetto.

What happened in Salerno?

“We were too hasty, we didn’t take the time to play our game and think. It’s a lesson for us in view of the next games, we must learn from this situation in order to not make the same mistakes again.”

Are you thinking about the Scudetto?

“We have it in mind, yes. We have done a lot of work to be where we are and I think it’s also important for us to show, with some trophies, that we are a great team. We are thinking about it, for sure, but it’s important to think game by game and to win as much as possible. Then in the future, we will see if we can win the Scudetto or not. But we must be focused only on the game, then we’ll see.”

The Rossoneri will face Udinese on Friday evening and they will need to send a signal to their rivals at the top. Hopefully, the draw against Salernitana was just the wake-up call they needed to bounce back in style.
