SempreMilan’s Player of the Month for April: Resilience in the rearguard persists

By Ivan Stoev -

The Rossoneri had a shaky month of April as they picked up two draws and two wins in Serie A which wasn’t the best of results when taking into account that the draws came against Bologna and Torino.

However, due to Inter dropping points as well, Milan managed to stay top of the table and keep their chances in the title race.

With another month gone by the problems have really stayed the same. The defensive part of Milan’s game is impressive. Despite a disappointing game against Inter in the cup where the Nerazzurri scored three goals, Pioli’s men have managed to keep a clean sheet in three out of the four games played in Serie A this month.

The problem, however, comes from the attacking players as they continued to struggle in front of goal with only Leao being a threat for the opposition. On that note, here are the best performers of the month.

3. Theo Hernandez – Average rating: 6.00

The Frenchman had a month with a lot of ups and downs, mainly in regards to his attacking performances. The left-back has been silently getting better and better in the defensive phase of the game and has had little problems at the back.

The more worrying part for him is that he wasn’t as effective going forward as we all know he could be. Nevertheless, he was one of the best players on the pitch for Milan during the past month.

2. Pierre Kalulu – Average rating: 6.10

The youngster has permanently found his place in the starting XI and has been most impressive for the last couple of months as he and Tomori formed quite the duo at the heart of Milan’s defence.

The Frenchman won our Player of the Month for March, but this time around he will have to settle for second place as he made a couple of mistakes in the cup game against Inter and then against Lazio in Serie A, which has affected his ratings.

1. Mike Maignan – Average rating: 6.30

The goalkeeper deservedly gets Player of the Month has he kept three clean sheets in Serie A, allowing just one goal against Lazio. Honestly, with the poor form in attack, the defence and Maignan are they key reasons that Milan have not lost a game in Serie A for a while.

The Frenchman wasn’t called that much into action, because of the great defending in front of him, but every time he was called it seemed like he had to work hard to keep the ball out of his net and so he did. A fantastic month for the ex-Lille and he will be hoping to continue in the same fashion in the last few games of the season.
