SempreMilan’s Player of the Month for March: defensive revelation secures first place

By Ivan Stoev -

Milan had a great March as they established their position at the top. In fact, Inter’s game in hand no longer matters as the Rossoneri have everything in their own hands in the Scudetto race.

The attacking department wasn’t really brilliant, it must be said, but the defence was on a very high level, allowing the team to grind out narrow 1-0 victories and keep clean sheets at the back.

It will be interesting to see if this form at the back will continue, but Pioli will be hoping for his strikers to step up in the final games of the season with the objective being silverware at this point. Here are the top performers of the last month.

3. Ismael Bennacer – Average rating: 6.63

The Algerian finally hit peak form this season after struggling to find consistency before the Christmas break. The midfield has really stepped up, helping his team in both phases of the game and even scoring a match-winning goal.

His creativity is not to be underestimated as well, as he has shown great dribbling abilities and perfect vision to put his teammates into dangerous spaces. Great month by Bennacer, who will be pivotal in the last couple of months for Milan.

2. Fikayo Tomori – Average rating: 6.88

One of the reasons behind Milan’s brilliant defensive efforts in the last month is definitely Tomori. The Englishman found himself the best partner in the shape of Kalulu and the two have been rock solid at the back.

The Rossoneri have pretty much managed to neutralise every attack they have faced and Tomori needs to be praised for the way he has led the backline in the absence of Kjaer. Fortunately, this isn’t the first month in which Tomori has been at such a high level and hopefully, he will continue in the same fashion until the end of the season.

1. Pierre Kalulu – Average rating: 7

And the highest rated player for the month of March is none other than Pierre Kalulu. The youngster stepped up after Romagnoli picked up an injured and has put Alessio on the bench after some brilliant performances. The youngster managed to handle the likes of Osimhen, Lautaro and Immobile, while proving himself to be very capable of being a starter.

Not only that, but with his help, the team has registered clean sheet after clean sheet, which he deserves a lot of praise for. Hopefully, he can keep this form up and it will be interesting to follow his progress going into next season when supposedly a new centre-back will be arriving.

  1. Him and Tonali had grown up a lot from last year compared to Saelemakers and Diaz who looked like they cant do more.

  2. Tomori and Kalulu should be our starting pair with Kjaer and either Romagnoli or a new signing as the 4th CB. They are both athletic, quick and aggressive. An off season working with Maldini and they could take the next leap.
