Serafini believes Leao will renew his Milan contract despite tough situation

By Isak Möller -

Rafael Leao has been in the spotlight over the last few weeks as AC Milan are looking to renew his contract. The situation is far from easy, however, and several big clubs are watching with great interest.

The winger’s current deal will expire in 2024 and given his performances over the last year or so, he deserves a pay rise. The key question has been how much lately, as Leao’s demands are a bit higher than what Milan are willing to offer.

In addition, there is the €19m fine that Leao owes his former club Sporting Lisbon for unlawfully terminating his contract. It has made an already complicated situation more complicated, it’s safe to say.

In his latest editorial for MilanNews, MilanTV pundit Luca Serafini acknowledged the tricky situation and also the fact that Milan are yet to decide on their top offer. He did, however, state that he believes Leao will remain at the club.

“Signals and rumours continue to arrive about his renewal, Maldini is also slightly unbalanced on the intentions of the club and just this week, he learned of talks with Sporting Lisbon for an agreement on the €20m fine, heavy as a boulder on the future of the player and in the negotiation. I will make a bet, based on personal feelings and not on certainties: Leao will renew and will stay at Milan,” he wrote.

  1. The problem is not in Leao. It lays in the uncontrollable factors, such as, the fine from Sporting and Mendes. And we can see how it played out on some of the previous contract extension issues.

  2. 1st of all, Milan can’t be the only club paying those money, as the ones who truly took the benefit of that situation were Lille, who snatched him for free, and then sold. him for nearly 30 million to Milan. Thus, the worst case scenario for Milan is to have those money paid half by them and Lille, 9,5 million each.
And when it comes to 7 m/season, it’s no brainer. Milan. owners should be utterly huge idiots to let him go now, a player who could potentially win Balon d’Or in coming years and worth several 100s of millions.
But as I said, I’m tired of hearing this from Milan. When it coems to the best players, him, Theo, Benaccer, Maignan… they should have short negotiation and then just hear the contract has been extended.
This way, we’ll turn into Borussia Dortmund at best.

    1. Leao, Balon d’Or. Thanks, I needed a good laugh this morning. Do you have any idea of how far from the genuinely top players (Haaland, Mbappe, Vini Jr, etc.) he is? Decent left wing with pace and one move, the best in the world, not even close, and never will be.
