Serafini discusses ‘great’ stoppage time rule at World Cup amid Serie A report

One of the hot topics regarding the World Cup thus far has been the many minutes added to each game. The referees are trying to cut down on time wasting and Luca Serafini believes this is a great solution, also for Serie A.

FIFA decided prior to the tournament that the referees would keep a close eye on time-wasting activities on the pitch, adding as many minutes as possible. Therefore, a stoppage time of 8-10 minutes hasn’t been unusual during the tournament.

A few days ago, it was suggested that this could be implemented in Serie A as well starting with next season. Milan have had some really awful active playing time stats this season, with just 21 minutes played in the second half in the win against Hellas Verona.

In his latest editorial for MilanNews, Luca Serafini shared his thoughts on the rules implemented at the World Cup and stated that it’s a ‘great’ solution to counter the time-wasting of the players (that never seems to end).

“I conclude with a theme that is dear to us: effective time. At the World Cup, we are seeing long stoppages at the end of each half, keeping the games going for 100-105 minutes. It’s like they went to extra time.

“Apart from the usual arrogant methods of FIFA, who brought us this surprise without really telling us, this is the natural consequence of the time-wasting which players, coaches and referees cannot escape.

“Until there is an official timekeeper, i.e. actual time, and a more serious attitude on the field from everyone, the paying public must be respected and not cheated. So, endless stoppages are great,” he concluded.
