Tonali: “Milan rejected me when I was 8-years-old”

By Ahmed Bdair -

Talking to Gazzetta Dello Sport, newly promoted Brescia midfield starlet Sandro Tonali spoke about his experiences as a youth player.

“If it’s true that I was rejected by Milan in a try-out? Yes, and more than once. I was 8 years old and I was playing in attack. If there’s disappointment? No, because I then went to Piacenza.”

The defensive midfielder is coming off a breakthrough season where he established himself as a starter for Brescia and one of the hottest young talents in Italian football. He also recently featured for the Italy U21 national team in the European Championships.

His impressive performances have drawn interest from several clubs including Milan, Juventus and Liverpool, but Tonali hinted that another season of first-team football with Brescia is much more likely.

His style has been likened to that of Andrea Pirlo but he was quick to dismiss the comparisons saying: “Blame the hair… I should cut it. Andrea is unreachable,” and that he sees himself in Milan legend Gennaro Gattuso.
