Sandro Tonali was the big hero the last time AC Milan faced Hellas Verona away from home, bagging a brace in the heat of the Scudetto race. Tomorrow, the two teams will face each other again.

Tonali had an advanced role in Milan’s 3-1 win against Verona last season, allowing him to roam free and add presence inside the home side’s penalty box. It was a tactical masterclass by Stefano Pioli’s the midfielder bagged a brace in that game.

He actually scored a goal after just 15 minutes as well, receiving a ball from Mike Maignan, but he was narrowly offside per VAR. In any case, it really showcased Tonali’s attacking position despite playing in the tandem on paper.

The two goals in the second half came after brilliance from Leao, setting up the goals, but Tonali was at the right place at the right time. It turned the game around for Milan as Verona scored the opener, adding some drama to the Scudetto race.

It was the third to last game of the season, and the win allowed Milan to keep their position at the top of the standings and also preserved the momentum. Tonali, as such, will look at the Verona clash with fondness and it remains to be seen if he will have an advanced role tomorrow as well.
