‘Some think about ambition, others about money’ – what Tonali has said about being at Milan

Sandro Tonali is the centre of attention at the moment as reports continue to mount suggesting that Newcastle United have made a big-money offer to sign him.

Seemingly out of nowhere reports began to surface suggesting Newcastle are serious about signing Tonali. MilanNews stated that their interest in Tonali very concrete and that they had put forward a bid worth €60m to try tempt the Rossoneri.

The most recent update from Calciomercato.com stated that Geoffrey Moncada and Giorgio Furlani have rejected that bid and are asking for €80m to even consider a sale, while a lot will depend on the midfielder’s willingness to actually leave.

However, even though Newcastle are apparently ready to double or even triple Tonali’s salary, there is already a precedent which suggests he will not entertain any offer from the Magpies.

Back in the summer of 2021, Tonali agreed to take a pay cut from €1.6m per year to €1.2m in order to stay at the club and make his original one-year loan deal a permanent stay.

He spoke about the decision in an interview with the paper La Gazzetta dello Sport, in which it became very apparent that realising a dream was far more important to him than they money he might be able to earn elsewhere.

“Why did I do it? Because the desire to stay at Milan came first. The terms of the deal with Brescia had expired and we were starting from scratch. For me it was important to take a step towards Milan,” he said.

“There were other clubs, even with higher salaries to offer, but I am happy here. Every player thinks differently. Some think about career and ambition, others about money. I believe that being well in a team is essential.

“At Milan I can achieve all my goals, I can have everything in the club where I am happy.”

However, Tonali would not be on lower pay for very long as he signed a contract extension until 2027 last season, explaining what it means to him to play for Milan.

“It is certain that I want to stay here, contract after contract. It would be nice to become an icon, but I don’t look so much further out of superstition. I am so attached to these colours that I know that my extension will never be a problem,” he said.

    1. It would certainly hurt Milan brand as Milan will not be seen as top club if it sell its key player to other club.

  1. 8 millions euros a year after tax can buy an awful lot of principles though…

Still think 70m for a fee is on the cheap side in this market.

  2. But he is 100% gone right? No way newspapers are making up rumors about something negative about Milan

its all the positive rumors that are fake 😀

    1. No-one reliable is saying he’s 100% gone.

There’s clearly discussions being had, it doesn’t mean the player will go for it or Milan will accept a bid, but there is almost certainly some negotiation afoot here – this isn’t CalcioMercato making up something for quick clicks

  3. 70m for Tonali is not a huge price, but still decent. However, let alone his quality, it would be sad to see a guy identified with the club goes to a club dominated by arab money. Dark times ahead…

    1. Bro it’s about the player or money is that TONALI REPRESENTS WHAT MILAN but i am 100 sure that CARDINALE is not that stupid

      1. I doubt this is anything to do with Cardinale, this is Moncada and Furliani making a decision which they think would be in the club’s best interest.

Personally, I don’t think it is (definitely not for the reported fee) but if it goes through, it’ll be their decision and their chance to redeem it through how they invest that money

        1. You should think why a player wants to leave who extended conyract less than a year.
It should be uncertainity or money, if its reallh money he could have already asked 6months before before extension to let him leave .
I dont know exactly what kind of uncertainity it is!

  4. Maybe Tonali is disheartened about Maldini’s departure, doesn’t care for RedBird and is open to leaving. If he does leave, and the money is wisely reinvested into great players, then, at the end of the day, this will still be competitive Milan, granted, not one we recognize.

  5. People think he would leave over a payday because its what they would do.
These are people with no principles and I cringe when I call them Milan fans. There is alot of these people on here, sadly

    1. Yep, all these “fans” are new fans, they see what’s happening in the rest of the football world and think that’s the Milan way which it never has been. They forget the highest we’ve ever paid for a player is still the 45m for Rui Costa, we’ve always built success and not bought it.

        1. it was. Funny stuff. Out of top 5 Milan arrivals 4 of them were a flop.. #1 Bonnuci, #2 Rui Costa #3 Paqueta, #4 Andre Silva, #5 Caldara. guess the not flop.
          I blame fasoni and mirabully

  6. This is hilarious, the team plays with a double pivot and by the start of the season the only player who can play that position when Tonali leaves is…….krunic, I can’t stop laughing. I wish the club gets 80-90 Mil, and, I would love to see the club try and make a double pivot even better.

Serious note, why even buy this club, considering the abition of the name and history. Make it make sense

  7. Yeah, down memory lane.

Signing Cafu on a free transfer,
    Kaka for 8m and
Thiago Silva for 10m were really good deals that shows with proper scouting, a serious club can unlock hidden gems.

  8. Not sure why my comment not going thru but apologies for the duplicates.

The infamous showing of the AC Milan kit outside the hotel room on rumours that City was going to buy Kaka:

‘i don’t want anything else, I just want to be well and be happy in the place where people love me. From this story I have understood how people love me at Milan, the fans and my team-mates have helped me make this choice.’

Kaka, who is under contract with the Rossoneri until June 2013 and is the highest-paid player at Milan, said money was never a motivating factor. ‘No member of my family has pushed me to go anywhere. I have not had any arguments with my father. My family has been very supportive and at no time have they forced me one way or the other.

    1. Well I thought Man City doubled his salary but he called off the transfer. So I think his word was justified by that act.

    2. That was different times, when Milan is forced to sell because of economic reason.

That reason isn’t there this time. We (should) be quite healthy financially this time around.

  9. hope he stays my idol pioli what he saying about this ? hope this is fake news for me he should wear the arm captain he is the future of the club if he leave we have pioli papa krunic playing hope the club think about it twice hope this is a joke of the month maldini out tonali out who else to go out hope you sell cardinale someone who knows about football this is not nba we call it football sempre milan

  10. Even Tonali sells, that means no one can’t sell.
    So sad
You may be successful but the Milan spirit is far from coming back

  11. Idk man. Instead of selling Tonali why not sell Cardinale and get a new respectful, ambitious owner who is not broke. This team is losing it’s soul everyday since Ibra retired. We are a meek feeder club now.

  12. This is Time for bussiness not emotional drama.

Let cash out on this one first. To recover all our lost. From the chinese takeover to this present day we have been counting lost.

This is our pay day Ase…

because one percent (1%) of something is better than nintynine percent (99%) of notting.

    #forzaTonali
    #payday

  13. we should all protest!! Tonali is our only symbol and future captain. Maldini gone, now Tonali…. no one is unsellable to RedFucc

  14. If this sale goes forward, it is a clear indication that money is valued over talent, dedication, dignity, and future success. We will not fill the void that Tonali leaves with two $25m players. This sale is an effort to pull out equity from the current squad and build valuation for Cardinale and not for Milan. I’ve watched every Milan game for the past 25 years- selling Tonali represents the first step towards a return to the banter years. A new class of Matri, Mexes, Constant, and Mesbah incoming
