Yonghong Li responds to rumours he tried to sign Cristiano Ronaldo: “We aimed for the best”

By Oliver Fisher -

Former AC Milan president Yonghong Li has no regrets about his 2017 summer spending campaign as the club’s fans ‘deserved better’.

Having arrived on the scene following the purchase of the club from Silvio Berlusconi, Yonghong entrusted Massimiliano Mirabelli and Marco Fassone with a summer transfer window which saw over €200m spent on 12 players.

Mirabelli has since made some bold claims about his time with the Rossoneri including how close he came to signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but perhaps his most staggering one was that he got Cristiano Ronaldo to agree to join.

During an exclusive chat with our correspondent Vito Angele, Yonghong discussed the thinking behind the big investments he made, and addressed rumours he tried for Cristiano.

“As David Han said during his interview, the fans deserved better after a long silence in the market and the competitions,” he said.

“We wanted the fans to be happy again and tried to do what they deserved. But the transfer market is determined by many different things.

“There were many players we were considering, though I’d prefer not to go into detail about the specifics. Obviously Cristiano is world-class, any coach would be happy to have him. My aim was to do the best by the team, the players and the management.”
