Mihajlovic: “It was a clear penalty”

By Alex Viola -

Sinisa Mihajlovic was outraged with the referee and his players after they twice lost a lead at Empoli.

“We came here to win and it’s disappointing that we didn’t, because when you take the lead twice then you need to bring the result home.” The Serbian told Mediaset Premium.

Mihajlovic was furious by replays of a penalty appeal due to a handball in the second half.

“It was a clear penalty. Why are their goal-line referees there to do if not to see these things?”

Mihajlovic then commented on the substitutions he made, and chances i Rossoneri had:

“With our substitutions we proved that we wanted to win the game and we even changed our system. We lacked determination meeded to finish off the game and wasted a couple of counter-attacks.”

“At the end of the day, the 2-2 result is fair. Empoli play some of the best football in Italy and it was a difficult match on their own turf. We have to compliment Marco Giampaolo on his Empoli team.”

“We knew that Empoli would lower the tempo for the remaining 15 or 20 minutes, so we had to raise it and try to finish them off. We lacked consistency, but if we would had that penalty and gone 3-1 up, it might have ended at that.”

Mario Balotelli came on for the final 30 minutes, but was booked and wasted a couple of great opportunities.

“He was hungry, possibly too much, and you can tell he hasn’t played for a long time. He did things wrong that he usually does not. The only way to recover form and fitness is by playing. The important thing is he continues to behave and train how he does. He is an extra resource.”

Luiz Adriano is also another resource, who was on the bench after his transfer to Jiangsu Suning collapsed.

“He spent seven days on planes, so he wasn’t in any condition to play today. I am happy he returned, he always worked well.”
