Agent of RB Leipzig star confirms talks with Maldini: “There were contacts with Milan”

By Oliver Fisher -

The agent of Mohamed Simakan has confirmed that AC Milan tried to sign his client back when Paolo Maldini was a director at the club.

It was back in January 2021 that Milan were most intensely linked with a move for Simakan, but in the end it was RB Leipzig who won the race to land him as the Rossoneri turned to Fikayo Tomori of Chelsea.

We even spoke to his representative at the time and he confirmed to us on one occasion that Simakan had agreed terms in principle with the Rossoneri and on another occasion that he had played his last game for Strasbourg as he looked to force an exit.

The agent of Simakan – Badou Sambague – spoke to CalcioNapoli24 about the links with Milan in the past and if it’s true that Maldini led talks over a deal.

“It wasn’t easy at first. The turning point came when Paolo Maldini observed him and said he could reach high levels,” he said (via MilanNews).

“There were contacts with Milan in the past, he was in the Rossoneri’s orbit. Even Inter were interested. Napoli? Now he is a pivot of Leipzig.”

Simakan is indeed now a key man at Leipzig, who have already lost Dominik Szoboszlai, Josko Gvardiol, Christopher Nkunku, and Alexander Sorloth this summer so are unlikely to let the Frenchman leave.
