Analysing the standings after Cagliari disappointment – how Milan can get Champions League

By Isak Möller -

Milan failed to take advantage of what was a big opportunity this evening, held to a 0-0 draw at home against Cagliari. This means that the game against Atalanta, in the final round, will be decisive for them.

So, what is the situation for Stefano Pioli’s men with regards to Champions League? They are currently in third place, level with Napoli on points but ahead on H2H. As long as Napoli and Juve get the job done, Milan will have to win.

The Partnenopei, with Gennaro Gattuso at the helm, will take on Hellas Verona at home and are big favourites to win. The Bianconeri, meanwhile, will face Bologna away from home and they almost always win that fixture.

Should either of them drop points, then a draw or perhaps even a loss could be enough for Milan to get Champions League. It’s still in their hands, but we all know that winning at Atalanta is far from an easy task.

Let’s remember that Milan have H2H advantage against both Juventus and Napoli, but for that to even matter, either of them would have to drop points.
