Calabria talks midfield role and plays down Juve loss as ‘we kept our identity’

By Isak Möller -

Milan failed to extend their 27-game unbeaten run this evening as Juventus scored three goals at the San Siro, winning by a two-goal margin. Davide Calabria was the only goalscorer for the Rossoneri, playing out of position.

As a result of Sandro Tonali’s suspension, and Rade Krunic’s positive COVID test, the right-back was forced to play alongside Franck Kessie in the midfield tandem tonight. He has played there before, though just a few times.

His performance was very impressive, not only because he helped out in defence and setting up several attacks, but also because he scored a great goal in the first half. Certainly, you could argue that he’s a better option than Krunic.

In an interview with MilanTV after the game, as cited by MilanNews, Calabria was asked about the game and what it was like playing in the new role. He assured that Milan have no intention of giving up.

On the defeat: “We lost a game after I don’t know how long. They are strong, we knew that. We had many absences and in the subs, it was felt. We played our game, we kept our identity. I’m happy with the goal but I would have preferred to win, let’s continue on our way.”

What Pioli told the team: “We will talk calmly tomorrow, he told us to keep calm. Tomorrow we will see what we did wrong and on Saturday there is another match.”

On the role: “I’m at the coach’s disposal. It takes intelligence and discipline, I think I have this and that I also can adapt to midfield. I’m happy with what we have done as a team, let’s turn the page and focus on Torino.

“The coach showed me how to move this morning. He gave me the task of limiting Ramsey and Ronaldo, he told me to stay between the lines, leaving Franck a little lower. It wasn’t easy, I’m proud of the team.”

On Saturday’s clash: “If it’s good we play so soon? Absolutely yes, we want to continue doing what we have done. The season is still long.”
