CM: Man City scare forced Milan to open talks with Mendes over star renewal

By Isak Möller -

Rafael Leao has been one of the best players in Serie A at the start of this year and AC Milan are delighted with his recent growth. However, with that comes interest from other clubs, which is why a renewal is in the pipeline.

In five games this year, Leao has scored three goals and two assists for the Rossoneri, showing his best qualities on the left flank. As said, this usually doesn’t go unnoticed and it hasn’t in Leao’s case either.

According to Calciomercato.com, Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara have been in talks with Jorge Mendes for several weeks over a renewal. The current deal will expire in 2024 but the interest of especially Man City, and other Premier League clubs, forced Milan to start work on a renewal.

Leao currently earns around €1.5m per year and the new salary will most likely take him to around €4m per year. Milan are well aware of his qualities and want to be on good terms with his agent as well, hence the renewal and pay rise.

Milan will face Inter in the next round of Serie A (scheduled for next Sunday) and Leao will play a key role for Stefano Pioli’s side.
