Costacurta questions Milan’s methods: “You go to watch Inter and it’s not like that”

By Oliver Fisher -

Former AC Milan defender Alessandro Costacurta has questioned the methods of the medicla and coaching staff given the ridiculous amount of injuries the team have suffered.

It certainly won’t be a happy Christmas at Milan after the draw against Salernitana on Friday night and above all after yet another muscle problem that hit Fikayo Tomori in the second half of the game, one that is likely to keep him out for over two months.

After the game, Stefano Pioli admitted that his team seem to have lost the magic they had before – something the ownership apparently didn’t appreciate – but above all the intensity of play and speed of thought on the pitch. This is something that the athletic condition of the players certainly impacts.

Costacurta was interviewed as part of a segment on Sky Calcio Club in which Milan’s training and recovery methods were put under the microscope, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

“Milan have an incredible effort to run well and play with a free head, perhaps there is also a bit of psychophysical tension in the players, I don’t know… maybe they are afraid of getting hurt,” he said.

“I see the other teams who play with pace, but without doing these things that are so exaggerated, in fact I ask you: how do you think Milan train? Is there time to recover? You go to watch Inter and it’s not like that, there is a difference.”

  1. Pioli is machine robot he makes the players train hard and give them military training everyday because I don’t understand this injuries we having something actually told me tomori will have injury and he did. Anyway don’t lose to sasuollo orelse kiss ur job goodbye I don’t wish that for you but all we want is a beautiful football and less injuries

  2. Exactly what I said about recovery time and someone said I didn’t have a clue about how professional sports teams train. You cannot train specifically for conditioning in season after a certain point. All physical training should be focused on recovery and injury prevention. There’s not better conditioning than playing a football match 2-3 times a week.

  3. Our players should stop those deadly goal celebrations. Okafor scored and got injured after that jump twist and bend style which unfortunately didn’t go well and then after, Tomori scored and his sliding was disastrous probably because that did of the pitch was dry out his long host/sock got to his kneel.

Some of these injuries can be prevented. The players can do better to saving their fitness and help the team achieve it’s objectives. Pioli might be over loading them at training doesn’t mean his intentions are negative. If the players feels the training load is too much, there are channels to complain to him and things are resolved. Afterall, they were recently asked if Pioli is good enough for them ad majority of the players said they’re with Pioli so, I see no issue from the work load to training.

Just my opinion though. I mean no harm and will not take any insult from anybody for saying my mind.

    Thanks,

  4. Costacuta has said it all. If Pioli is smart, he would have gotten solution to the high rate of injury a long time ago. Also, if he rotates our players regularly, it will reduce the workload on some players and help others to improve. If necessary, he should change his physiotherapist to someone who will give a better routine to minimize fatigue and maximize physique. By doing this, he will definitely get result and his job won’t be at risk as it is now.

    1. Pioli and Osti are working together for many years now, I doubt the former will confront the latter about this issue. I’ve heard, but can’t confirm, that he also was very defensive about him and asked to keep him. If anything, it’s the management role to assess this problem and get rid of the problematic elements.
