‘Without the Champions League’ – Deschamps questioned on Theo and Maignan’s future

Didier Deschamps has responded to a question about whether Mike Maignan and Theo Hernandez may look to leave AC Milan this summer.

There are quite a few things that unite Maignan and Theo beyond the fact that they are both France internationals. Both of them have contracts expiring in just over 12 months, both have had a rollercoaster season and both are being repeatedly linked with a summer exit.

It is believed – based on the reports circulating – that the goalkeeper had a verbal agreement but Milan put things on stand-by, which irritated him. Meanwhile, the left-back wants a pay rise to renew and has so far only been offered a deal with a pay cut.

Deschamps on Theo and Maignan

Could this be the right time for Mike Maignan and Theo Hernandez to leave Milan, therefore? Didier Deschamps, the head coach of France, responded to this question from La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“We need to see if they want them, if Milan want to keep them, their contractual situations. I know that Theo’s contract expires in 2026,” he said (via MilanNews).

“There are no right or wrong choices, but shared ones. Without the Champions League it could be more complicated for them [to stay].”

  1. I find it quite disrespectful especially from Theo who now wants to leave after he was definitely ome of the big reasons we got eliminated from Ucl and also performed terribly in the league because he is unable to defend.. Now I know that a pay cut Milan offered to him is also disrespectful, but they should find an agreement in between as 8m he is asking for in not deserved after these past 2 seasons.. and at least he should try to reedem himself.

    1. Totally agree. Incredibly stupid to say that. Quality isn’t in which tournaments you play in.

Just for an example that I know is very bad as this perticular player hasn’t had a very good career. But Robin Olsen the swedish national team goalkeeper since at least 2017. He has almost not played at all in his clubs. But always been the first pick in the national team and has done a very good job in the national team anyway.

So to say that a goalkeeper may not play in the national team if they are not in CL. Well, that’s just stupid. If they are good, they should play. And if you can’t judge them if they not in CL then that’s your own lack of knowledge that is the problem.

      1. i think his statements speak more about the depth of France’s team than actual UCL play. The WC winning argentina side had a few players not competing in the UCL and yet, they still beat France.

  2. Only deschamps woupd be dumb enough to call up Theo rn anyway. Theo hasn’t put in a good performance in months and looks completely unmotivated to even run. There’s no shortage of French wide backs who would actually try on defense, but this is Deschamps after all, the man too stubborn to change the team he’s been using since 2018 and still wonders why they aren’t winning despite they mountain of depth they have

  3. It would probably be beneficial for Deschamps for them to stay at Milan. As they would not have the extra load of UCL in the season leading into a summer world cup.
I suspect a lot of Theo drop in form is over work combined with volatile personality.
