CM: Diaz to face stiff competition to keep his place at Milan

By Euan Burns -

Brahim Diaz is set for a fight to keep his place in the AC Milan squad after the arrival of Charles De Ketelaere and the return of Yacine Adli, a report claims.

As has been reported by Calciomercato.com, the Spanish attacking midfielder will have to really impress Stefano Pioli if he is to keep his place behind the striker.

The team will of course be rotated a lot given the busy calendar and the way that it is affected by the 2022 Qatar World Cup. The hard truth for Diaz is that there are two more players who can play in his preferred role.

New signing De Ketelaere is versatile across the front line but Adli, who returned to the team after a loan spell at Bordeaux, will certainly want to play through the middle and he has been very impressive in pre-season.

The former Real Madrid and Manchester City has got his work cut out to stay in the team regularly.

  1. The hard truth is he might not even be included in the Champions League squad. There are 21 non-homegrown players competing for 17 non-homegrown slots available.

    1. Lazetic doesn’t need to be registered for CL because he is U21. So we have 25 players exclude : Brahim Diaz & Tiemoue Bakayoko, Brescianini & Jungdal (big chance to go for loan).

6 Italian Home-Grown : Mirante, Calabria, Florenzi, Gabbia, Tonali, Pobega. Plus Lazetic U21 doesnt need to be registered.

    1. He tried in his first season. Didn’t work.
Diaz is a playmaker, but he needs a striker who moves a lot outside the box. Like Rebic.
And Pioli is unlikely to change the system just to accommodate one player.

  2. Brahim Diaz is behind Milan Scudetto triumph. It was Covid 19 that brought his high performance a bit lower but he is strong now. Remember he is a Madrid star with a lot of experience

  3. Diaz requires a false 9 like Rebic, or possibly Origi.
Pioli insists on having a reference striker.
    Nothing will change Pioli’s mind.
As much as I like Diaz, it makes no sense to change the system just to accommodate a player who will almost certainly start the season from the bench.
Of course he could be seen as a choice for a more tactically flexible coach. Definitely not Pioli.

    1. No, Brahim doesn’t need a False-9 style strikers.
Brahim Diaz’ strenght is his dribbles and for about 10 first matches pas season he was good. And Pioli’s forwards need to be strong at 1v1 or find good spaces, Brahim was good at first but he looks not agile anymore after the Covid-19. Brahim Diaz needs to improve his agility & acceleration, because finding spaces isn’t his strong point.

But finding spaces are Yacine Adli’s strong point, thats why Yacine Adli looks so much better than Brahim at Pre-season. Brahim Diaz looks lose his strong point.

      1. But during those first games if the season, Rebic WAS the striker. That’s not a coincidence.
I agree.. he’s a dribbler. And that’s specifically why he needs support from the striker. He has to cover too much space on his own.
With a striker who practically lives in the box like Giroud, Diaz has to face the entire defense on his own. That’s impossible.

  4. If Brescianini & Jungdal go out for a dry loan, then we still have 27 players & CL can registered only 25 players with limitation 7 players must be Italian Home-Grown.

It means there is big chance that Brahim Diaz & Tiemoue Bakayoko will not registered for CL season 2022/2023.

Or there will be some very interesting offers for our 1 forward & 1 pivot, so they have a place. But i dont think thats ideal to improve our strenght at european league.

So actually the best decision for all is : Cancel their loan. So Brahim Diaz & Tiemoue Bakayoko find other clubs where they can get more playing-time.
