Pietro Mazzara believes that CEO Giorgio Furlani will have to be clear during his interview process with potential sporting directors just how much power they will have.
As has been widely reported, Milan are looking for a new sporting director to join the current team. Geoffrey Moncada is the technical director at present but is expected to resume a role as chief scout, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s influence could actually be downsized.
A number of different names have been mentioned, such as those who have Serie A experience Fabio Paratici and Igli Tare, plus more ‘European’ options in Thiago Scuro and Markus Krösche. More recently, Tony D’Amico of Atalanta seems to have gained momentum as a candidate too.
Mazzara published his weekly column for MilanNews in which he praised Christian Pulisic and Tijjani Reijnders but criticised the squad in general for a couple of things that happened after the game.
“Chapter on choosing the sporting director. Giorgio Furlani, in the next few days, will get to the heart of the matter but two important aspects will have to be discussed with the candidates for that role, which are of fundamental importance,” he said.
“[Firstly] Who chooses the players and the coach, and who does the negotiations. Any sporting director wants to be at the forefront in these decision-making phases, they are the fuel that moves their work and whoever has decision-making power at this time in those two areas.
“Namely Furlani for the accounts and Moncada for the players, will have to cooperate with the new director, but at the same time the latter will want guarantees on his ability to make choices and to have broad areas of expertise, both on the field and behind the desk.”
