GdS: Chess game between Pioli and Spalletti begins ahead of European derby

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan will face Napoli in the Champions League quarter-finals and neither side can complain about that draw. Given the schedule in the league, it will be an interesting battle between the two managers.

A little over one week prior to the first leg, Milan and Napoli will face each other in the league. It’s a very important game for the standings but the risk is that both sides will be focused on the Champions League tie already.

Three times in just over two weeks, meaning Stefano Pioli and Luciano Spalletti will have a good amount of material to study, as Gazzetta Dello Sport highlights (via MilanNews). Each game will be like a chess game; the managers will have to do something different to surprise each other.

Many small details can be changed and that’s what makes these encounters so interesting. Milan’s key players are Theo Hernandez and Rafael Leao, while Napoli’s left side of Kvaratskhelia and Mario Rui is scaring everyone as well.

The European derby, as the newspaper calls it, will be decisive in many ways and it remains to be seen how the managers will handle the pressure.

  1. Everyone’s heads so far up Napoli’s ar*e. They are beatable. Providing we all come back fit from the internationals and really get at them in the league match then we put ourselves in a great position to beat them. Knock them out and suddenly all of Europe will be taking notice of Milan. We need to prioritise this now. The league matches won’t be pretty but UCL we have to approach every game fighting for our lives. We absolutely can make it to the final and from there it’s just a football match..anything can happen.
