GdS: Why Milan could opt for Scamacca instead of Origi despite higher cost

By Isak Möller -

Ahead of next season, AC Milan are looking to bring in a striker that can be their primary one for the future, seeing as Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Olivier Giroud could soon return. Gianluca Scamacca is one of their targets, a report claims.

Earlier this morning, Gazzetta Dello Sport (via MilanNews) reported that Milan are ready to pay €30m for the services of Scamacca this summer. A figure that Sassuolo feel is a bit too low, but the Rossoneri can pay straight away (which is tempting).

In the last few days, there have also been many reports linking Milan with Divock Origi, whose contract will expire in the summer. The talks are advanced and the Rossoneri are a step away from securing his services, per Gazzetta Dello Sport.

The newspaper adds that Milan could decide to focus on Scamacca instead of Origi, though, due to the UEFA squad rules. We explained the situation in a recent article but in short, having homegrown players (same country) benefits the teams in terms of being able to have a bigger squad.

  1. This is bullshit 😂.
Origi on a free should be nonnegotiable for Milan. He’s in his prime, has experience, and most importantly he’s a winner.
Anyway, I’ll prefer to have both of them in our squad but, if I have to choose one, I’ll definitely pick Origi over Scamacca anyday anytime.

    1. you’ll pick a striker thats shit and no one wants over a hot prospect that could go onto Immobile/Vlahovic’s levels?

      Yeah very smart

      1. @Milan22, Lol, You also looks smart by mentioning Immobile as a striker who’s on another level. He’s an average player in an average team, he’s failed to deliver in all the big teams he’s played in including the national team.

  2. Origi is a fine choice to help the attack but we’re fooling ourselves if we think he’s “the guy”… he’ll be a great depth player who has starter quality but we need a top striker. Personally I’d sign Scamacca and Belotti instead. Buuuut Origi can also play wing so why not get him as well.

  3. Beloti, Origi and quality RW together will take us somewhere better next season then focus on young striker may after the retirement of IBRA and towards the end of Giroud’s era. Since we don’t have budget am worried if we get Scamacca, it will be difficult to fix midfield and RW problems.

  4. I’d take belotti and origi altogether. With all due respect, We could not rely on Ibra next season. With origi and belotti we have 3 fit strikers next season. And also we have plenty UCL experienced player next season (ibra, giroud, and origi).
Scamacca is the typical Italian player nowaday. Pricey, high salary demand while their goal ratio is less than 0.5.

  5. I’d rather sign Dybala than Scamacca. We need an AMC, not 4 strikers. You do all remember we play with 1 player forward, so Ibra, Giroud + 1 is more than enough and we have Rebic and Leao that can step up.

  6. The management cannot plan for next season thinking about UEFA squad rules; if it was the other way around and Scamacca was the one free of contract, I’d say it makes sense, sort of, but spending over 30M on a player just because UEFA squad rules doesn’t hold water, if Pioli wants him that would be a different thing but, to me Origi and Scamacca are not even that alike for Pioli to choose one over the other; the first thing is to understand how Pioli wants to play and what he’s thinking ahead of next season and what profiles he needs and then buy players based on that. I hope Milan is planning their Summer market based strictly on what the team needs from a tactical and performance standpoint, and nothing else.
