Journalist urges Milan to avoid ‘overloading’ Adli and Pobega in midfield

By Isak Möller -

The season opener is approaching for AC Milan and there could still be some movement on the mercato. As highlighted by pundit Luca Serafini, the midfield is a department that could need reinforcement.

Stefano Pioli currently has Ismael Bennacer, Sandro Tonali, Rade Krunic, Tommaso Pobega and Yacine Adli at his disposal for the midfield. The latter two have returned from their respective loan spells and still need a little more time to adapt.

Franck Kessie’s departure has inevitably left a hole in the midfield and there are different opinions on whether Adli and Pobega can fill his shoes. As stated by pundit Luca Serafini for MilanNews, it would be unwise by Milan to put too much pressure on them.

“Numerically, the Milan squad is almost completed. In terms of quality, we cannot ignore Ibra’s prolonged absence and Kessie’s farewell. Overloading the shoulders of Pobega and especially Adli is not an intelligent move. Their acclimatization will have to be methodical and gradual, as Pioli has shown before,” he stated.

The role which Kessie had, in the midfield tandem, is a rather delicate one and the feeling is that Adli might not be the one. He has more attacking qualities, suited for the attacking trio. Pobega, on the other hand, could be a better fit but there’s no doubt he needs time.

  1. I do not believe milan issue is replacing kessie quality, because I believe Pobega and Adli is more than enough. However issues lie in the Milan anchor engine room. What happen if either Tonali or Bennacer is injured? Don’t think neither pobega nor Adli has defensive qualities to play as anchor midfield.

    1. Pobega and Adli are no way even remotely close to to Kessie’s quality in terms of the pivot and esp in terms defensively. We need a CDM for sure that can ay the pivot. Yoko can’t play that role as he doesn’t get enough playing time

  2. AC Milan need replace bakayoko ( return him to chelsea) with jean onana or seko fofana. Dont give burden too much for pobega

    1. That is not going to work, Milan still won’t be able to register Onana/Fofana in Serie A (not just UCL) because they are non-homegrown above 21 years old players (Serie A limit: 17; Currently at Milan: 19, note that CDK and Lazetic are U21)

It would be different if the replacement is Pape Matar Sarr. He is still U21 which means he is not limited by registration in Serie A (Unlike UCL, Serie A allow U21 players to be registered without taking quota even if they had not been at the club for at least 2 years)

  3. Typical old fashioned ideas from an old man. Has he not watched Milan over the last three years? The young players have grown because they’ve been given a chance. That’s how you learn if a player can sin or swim, you throw them in at the deep end. Anyone who thinks midfield or defence is an issue isn’t paying attention, Milan have 2.5 centre forwards, only one of whom can stay fit.
