Longo: Two defenders and one striker – Milan’s plan for the January window

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan are preparing for the January window and at least a few reinforcements are expected during the month. In addition to the defence, the Rossoneri are also set to strengthen the attack, a report claims.

Milan have struggled with many injuries this season and especially in defence, with Theo Hernandez covering at centre-back in the last few weeks. Simon Kjaer has now recovered from his injury, but the likes of Pierre Kalulu, Marco Pellegrino and Malick Thiaw are still out.

According to Daniele Longo, the Rossoneri intend to sign two defenders and one striker in January. Matteo Gabbia, who currently is on loan at Villarreal, could be recalled and Arsenal’s Jakub Kiwior is also high up on the wish list.

Juan Miranda has also been mentioned for the left-back role, and it remains to be seen if Milan can strike up a deal with Real Betis for an early transfer.

As for the No.9 role, Milan have been linked with many names but there is no primary target as things stand. Once we get closer to January, there should be more information but for now we will have to wait.

Luka Jovic has scored in his last two league games for Milan and he also did well against Newcastle mid-week. The search for a new striker, therefore, has become a bit less urgent and puts the Rossoneri in a better negotiating position.

  1. We have 6 CBs and 6 FBs – what are we going to do with 2 more defenders???

We have an established CB pairing of Tomori and Thiaw, and established FBs who are captain and vice captain.

We have young players coming through in Pellegrino, Bartesaghi and Simic. How will any of these get playing time if we sign yet more defenders?

The reason we’re struggling is because of injuries. Our plan for dealing with injuries cannot be to have a squad bigger than an American Football team???

Wha happens if these new signings just get injured as well?

    Do we sign some more?

    And if they’re all fit?

Erm we won’t be able to fit them into a match day squad.

And who is available in January?

Most of the players available are struggling at their current clubs. Why else would elit uproot mid-season?

That doesn’t mean that there aren’t players available. One of our best windows in recent years was in 2020 when we signed Kjaer and Ibrahimovic, and turned a struggling side into title contenders and eventual winners.

This is what we should be looking to do in January. Particularly with the team struggling.

  2. Juan Miranda Or Lutsharel Geertruida or Jeremy Frimpong
Jonathan David or Gift Emmanuel Orban
    Maxine Esteve
But why not CDM that we don’t have like florentino Louis or maxence caqueret

  3. Kjaer is excellent when he is fit. Simic knows the culture, is accustomed to living and playing in Italy, is fast, is strong and already played two amazing matches in the Rossoneri (remember the one againsta RM?). Thiaw avoided the knife and doesn’t need a surgery.

Two CBs? Heck no. Waste of money. One at max. And even then either Gabbia or Kiwior. Save the money for the new coach and the player he wants.
