Davide Calabria was snubbed once again as Roberto Mancini named his Italy squad on Friday evening. It’s a decision that has sparked a debate regarding the manager’s selections, with a few more questionable picks.
The Milan captain has been left out of the Italy squad before and it’s well known that Mancini doesn’t like the player that much. However, amid the injury of Alessandro Florenzi, he was expected to get a call-up this time out.
Mancini has always referred to the fact that he cannot include more than two right-backs (Florenzi and Di Lorenzo), but this decision is harder to explain. Something that Andrea Longoni brought up in his latest editorial for MilanNews.
“Finally, we learned with great amazement the Italy call-ups: happy for Pobega but also speechless for Calabria. How can you prefer Mazzocchi? Davide is the captain of the Italian champions, he has won and has experience in Europe too. With all due respect to Mazzocchi, even just including him is embarrassing. Excluding Calabria as well is even worse,” he wrote.
Calabria has a perfect opportunity to prove Mancini this evening as he will be up against Kvischa Kvaratskhelia. The Napoli winger has been in tremendous form lately and it won’t be an easy task for the Milan captain.
Last few call ups resulted in Calabria getting injured either on the pitch or training.
He ironically returns to Milan injured each time.
This is the thing about coaches like Mancini – they involve personal reasons in professional decisions.
It’s clear he has something against him, and I really hope he will be fired very soon.
Had he had a balls, he would sing off immediately after Mundial fiasco.
Its not only Calabria’s exclusion that’s the issue, he continues to call up light weight and frankly spent up players like Bonucci, Juninho, and Acerbi, he needs to remove these deadwood players ….but alas..he will continue this fiasco ..

Guys, I love Calabria so much, and he is even our captain.
But in all sincerity, I remember I told someone in this blog that the Calabria of this season isn’t thesame Calabria of last season, he’s deep out of form, some people here came bashing, look a coach’s primary objective is to win, and in trying to do that, he has to play with players current form, thesame Mancini had both Calabria and Florenzi for the WC qualifiers.
Even though I haven’t really watched Mazzocchi play compared to Calabria, but I feel Calabria this season has not been up to his standards.
Please cut Mancini some slack

Mazzocchi looked fantastic against Juventus. Many of the goals Milan concede come down the right side, Calabria doesn’t merit inclusion. Mancini likes full backs who can attack.

Bad decision for Italy, Great decision for Milan. Same thing happens in French national team, they refused to call up Theo Hernandez for the longest time and Mike Maignan is the 2nd choice behind loris? and Fikayo Tomori has not played half as many national matches for England as he should have.

He fell from glory to grass after he lost the World Cup slot
A blow to him personally but probably good for the team. Calabria has had an OK season not quite up to last year, but I’d rather our capitano rests and is fully fit for the heavy fixture list after the international break.

Calabria are average RB but quality team player. Its not too much of debate if Mancini didnt prefer him, his type of player often overlooked by national manager.
I think Calabria is above average at Serie-A already, he has pretty good defending stats last year.
I might be subjective, but Calabria still deserve to be called than Mazzocchi or Emerson, if we consider the club performance point of view.

The conversation shouldn’t be about including Mazzocchi, my guess is most people commenting haven’t even seen him play. He’s actually a good player. The conversation should be about how this clown is calling up players like Acerbi, Jorginho, Emerson, Immobile, who are all players well into their 30’s that will have no impact on the team 4 years from now if and that’s a big if we even qualify for the next world cup. It’s no longer a certainty.
