Massara discusses Milan’s transfer strategy, Maignan signing and ‘extraordinary’ Pioli

By Isak Möller -

During the mercato inauguration at Grand Hotel in Rimini, Ricky Massara spoke about Milan’s recent years in terms of mercato-related business. Among other things, he discussed their strict policies regarding spending.

The Rossoneri’s sporting director is expected to renew his contract very soon and the same goes for the technical director Paolo Maldini. Once that is completed, the duo will be able to focus on the market again and make up for lost time.

Massara, as mentioned, was present in Rimini today and he looked to be in a good mood when captured by the reporters on the scene. During the event, as cited by MilanNews, the former Roma director was asked about various topics.

On the Scudetto…

“It’s a culture of work, enthusiasm, unity, a team that builds the team and a coach who puts the players in a position to grow, something done in an excellent way by Pioli. The Scudetto arrived collectively, there were moments of difficulty but everyone was involved and each of them gave something, even those who played little.

“Everyone made their mark. I’m thinking about Tatarusanu’s penalty save, Maldini’s goal vs. Spezia, Rebic’s recovery from which Tonali’s goal vs. Lazio was born. This is thanks to Pioli, he did an extraordinary job and Milan fans should thank him.”

How hard was the Donnarumma decision and how did you get to Maignan?

“It was a delicate phase but not in reference to Donnarumma, who is a great champion. When the new ownership arrived there was a strategy aimed at changing the economic condition, we had to regain competitiveness without forgetting sustainability. We had to do it out of necessity. This led us to make difficult, delicate choices, but we are happy to have found an extraordinary goalkeeper who will make history at Milan.”

As said, the renewals have been holding back Milan’s market recently but the feeling is that Maldini and Massara won’t waste any more time. After all, they are keen on reinforcing the Rossoneri ahead of the upcoming season.
