Milan captain Calabria forced to withdraw from derby squad due to injury

Davide Calabria has been forced to throw in the towel ahead of AC Milan’s game against Inter tomorrow in the prestigious Derby della Madonnina. As reported by several outlets, he sustained an injury in training yesterday.

The Milan captain was taken off in the game against Liverpool due to a minor calf discomfort, but he was able to return to training in the following days. As such, it looked like he would be at Paulo Fonseca’s disposal for the derby against Inter tomorrow.

However, as stated by various outlets including MilanNews, Calabria picked up a muscle strain in his adductor during the training session this morning and will miss the game. As a result, Emerson Royal will be the starting right-back for Milan tomorrow.

Emerson Royal and Calabria have both been heavily criticised by the fans at the start of this season and the Brazilian must give his all tomorrow. He cannot afford another bad performance and most importantly, Fonseca cannot afford a loss as this would see him sacked.

Kick-off is set for 20:45 and it could be a rather strange atmosphere just before the referee blows his whistle, as Inter will have no proper tifo this time.

  1. Pioli used 3 5 2 tactics in grey area season when Milan had terrible situation.

If they didn’t sent Kalulu on loan 35 2 would be good option against very strong team.

Kalulu Tomori Pavlovic. We can see how Kalulu and Pavlovic both have natural positions lcb and rcb. And now three in the midfield with Reijnders Fofana and Ruben Loftus. Left wing back is naturally Leao and now question is can Pulisic play right wing back ? Morata or Abraham would be making pair with Leao who played as central forward at Portugal team.

I think this would make difference for Milan against strong team. We might not have beautiful play but it will give better result.

    1. In theory you’re right. But Kalulu hasn’t been able to stay fit in years. But now that he went to Juve, he’s staying fit and efficient…. go figure.

Anyway, Kalulu is out on loan. Hopefully we take him back in the summer, and play him at RB. We cut loose one of Calabria/Emerson and use the leftover as competition for Pierre.

  2. Honestly, I don’t like this Fonseca. He loaned out Kalulu, Florence was injured & he knows & his Emerson is nothing but a shit. Now we are about losing Kalulu permanently & his Emerson is terrible. Please sack this guy, please

  3. The attempt to upgrade the RB position by hiring Emerson Royal must classify as one of the biggest blunders in Milan’s history. Like Origi or Caldara.

It will be painful to watch Royal against Inter.

    1. Origi was free and Caldara had great potential. Meanwhile everybody knew that Emerson Royal is a horrible player but our video scout/sporting director has the foresight of a crackhead and our trader/CEO was ok to burn some money. Arguably in the top 5 of the worst Milan transfers ever.

      1. Origi was “free” except for his extremely high salary for a player that bad, who doesn’t want to go anywhere and obviously prefers to live in a top European city like Milano doing nothing and earning millions of dollars per year. And we’re stuck with him because other better managed teams don’t want to have anything to do with that bum.

Caldara had potential… maybe. But shipping out Bonucci simultaneously to bringing in Caldara was also a historically bad move.

But yes, I agree that signing Emerson Royal was also historically bad, like I said. Yes, we all knew he was trash. Tottenham says thanks.

  4. How did emerson royal make it to become a pro I really dont understand. Like how.. How did he go through the youth ranks end up to become a pro. Wauww!!!! That barca scout that brought him to europe must have done quite a big favour.
