Milan legend Costacurta slams Donnarumma: “He has lost some credibility”

By Isak Möller -

Gigio Donnarumma has decided to leave Milan at the end of the month, when his contract with the club will expire. Unable to reach an agreement on the renewal, he will have to start looking for his new destination.

Or to be more correct, Mino Raiola will have to find a new club for the goalkeeper and that won’t be easy, as few clubs are willing to make such a huge investment. Therefore, Donnarumma could be forced to accept less than what Milan offered.

Paolo Maldini called Raiola’s bluff and it remains to be seen how the agent will sort the situation. Speaking live on Sky Italia (via MilanNews), Milan legend Alessandro Costacurta had a few words for the young goalkeeper.

“Unfortunately, I think they both lost. What is surprising is the way the player has lost the opportunity to compete with his family in Europe. I’ve been there and I know how satisfying it is and he won’t be able to feel it. He was a great protagonist of the champions ride and he won’t be able to do play in it with his family’s shirt on. I say family because that’s how I define Milan.

“As a man, then, he has lost some credibility because choosing to leave like this is never nice. I understand the desire for a new challenge but he could have stayed at Milan for a few more years. The club, meanwhile, have lost the opportunity to monetize from his departure. The thing that left me dazed is how the boy doesn’t think that he put the club who raised him in difficulty,” he stated.

Harsh words but perhaps the right ones, as Donnarumma chose to give up on the club that raised him, leaving them with nothing in terms of a transfer fee.

  1. For Milan getting rid of Donnaruma is a good riddance to bad rubbish.

See the example of Giroud renewal with Chealsea just help the club make some money from him.

Unfortunately, for Donnaruma no serious big club will sign a selfish and insensitive player just because he can make 1 save per match.

They more reasonable options in the market

  2. $20M to agent as renewal fee is absurd. Donna must have been blind to the fact that there are zero paying fans since Covid started. New season is likely to be zero too. Which team has so much cash to burn?

  3. Donnaruma has been overvalued all along, and what is important not only in football, but also in life, is loyalty, honesty and humility. Unfortunately, in my opinion, he has none, and unless he matures, he will face failures in life, and money will be his poison.
I am 76 years old, and I have been a loyal Milan supporter all my life.

    1. Loyalty, honesty, humility.

This is life advice for me.

If you think of how the club moved quickly for Maignan, I’d say they are true professionals very prepared to handle all scenarios. I don’t think we should worry about the gk spot because Plizzari will be back so we are more than set. To me it is a matter of finding good midfield options.

  4. He feels like his already winning Ballon d’or.
Even Kaka was never wanted to move to Madrid after winning that honor.
