MN: How Milan’s transfer approach will change after Tonali’s Newcastle move

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan will be approaching the rest of the summer in a different way after Sandro Tonali’s move to Newcastle United is confirmed, a report claims.

As has been reported by Milan News, the Rossoneri do not intend to make another major sale once Tonali’s move to Newcastle has been finalised.

This suggests that Theo Hernandez is not going to leave the club this summer, and the same can be said for Mike Maignan. The French duo have been linked with some wealthy clubs.

Milan certainly do want to make sales of a different nature though. There are plenty of players in the squad that they would like to ship out, with Ante Rebic and Divock Origi being at the top of the list.

Fode Ballo-Toure can be added to this list and the club could still decide to cut their losses and sell Charles De Ketelaere after one season at the club.

  1. Stupid. They didn’t intend to sell Sandro until Newcastle arrived with “an offer they can’t refuse”. They said the key players were “protected”. Let’s see what happens when somebody comes for Theo or Mike. Thankfully Furlani the former portfolio manager is a Milan fan.

      1. Yeah, but objectively, Leao, Theo and Mike are Top 3 in their positions in the world, whereas Sandro wasn’t (his Bandieri status aside). My guess is those three leave only on bank breaking deals.

        1. And not this summer. Let’s see how the season goes and what the finances look next summer… Maybe one of them has to go but I wouldn’t worry that yet. Bigger things to worry about now such as, who’ll be the #10 and RW? Who’s gonna replace Tonali? Where do we bury Origi’s useless body?

  2. our mistakes origi rebic and further will stay as long as possible like samu did – i guess origi is earning 4,5mio – one of the reasons why paolo has left

  3. If we had used a 20th approach to transfers over the last 15 years I reckon we could’ve ended up with a squad that was a bit like this:

    Donnarumma

    RUBEN DIAS ROMAGNOLI
    Darmian De Sciglio
    Cristante
    Pessina Locatelli

    MBAPPE HAALAND Aubameyang

    with:

    Plizzari
    Gori
    Bellanova
    Gabbia
    Ely
    Calabria
    Zanellato
    Pobega
    D. Maldini
    Verdi
    Cutrone
    Petagna

The players in capitals are signings: total cost € 336.60 which is a fraction of what we’ve spent in that period.

The rest are youth players-ish that would’ve cost us nothing.

Most of those players are playing in the top leagues. Some in teams that finished above us.

But in my completely unprovable opinion, many of those players, had they stayed at the club, played together for a number of years, been given just a modicum of stability, they would’ve reached levels that the great Milan players reached.

I have included Donnarumma. He wouldn’t have left the club in the 20th century. Most players wouldn’t have.

Instead we’ve had 10-15 years of chaos whilst the media and fans demanded more and more transfers and chaos.

That’s why I hate the transfer market.

    1. I’m not saying we’d have signed Mbappe or Halland or Dias.

I merely chose three of the best players in the world in their respective positions.

This is what you can do when you don’t faff about trying to change every single player in the squad, and writing off every single youth player.

  4. They said they wanted to compete with the premier league clubs!?! Great, Milan are now a club like tottenham and arsenal and at best a feeder club. I’ll be amazed if we win any other relevant trophies in the next 10-15 years with this strategy. We had the chance to build a team around this young world class superstar but have now sold him and need to start again……… Oh, and we will do it again, and again. No building blocks – sell to the highest bidder. The difference between us and the clubs I named at the start? Even tottenham kept Kane. Tonali will be an Italy captain in the future. And Milan fans will never forget what we lost….. needlessly

  5. Did I miss something – the article didn’t answer their own question: how Milan’s market will change with Tonali’s sale….I’m still waiting for the answer.

Or could it be that Milan WAS intending to sell a star player but now no longer have to because Tonali was sold?

Hmmm. Well did we even need to sell Sandro in the first place? No. Ok fine we did – in what now seems to be a below market deal for a DM considering Declan Rice is 134M and Mosies Calceido is 100M plus…but fine. We made a profit. BUT What happened to that 120M UCL $$$??? Never a mention anymore of that. Redbird are masters at PR Spin. Got the majority to forget all about that 120M eh?? Still nickel and dime every deal. You would think w that 120M and the 65M from Tonali we would be flush with cash – after all we were profitable this past season and that was BEFORE the 120M UCL prize $$. So why haven’t we signed the players we are after yet?? RW, striker, the mids, etc…And why do we continue to grind down each deal allowing other clubs to swoop right in and steal them right from under our noses??

ZERO has changed. We are still after the free transfers, players on expiring deals w cheap release clauses players with injury history, young unproven players with cheap salaries. No mentioned of established players really. Just ones with potential and high resale value.

You would think given our dire need at striker and RW – we would have immediately pounced on the RW from Villarreal (who Pioli deems as perfect) for 25-30M and then get our striker like Balgoun or Openda for 40-50M and be done. All those aforementioned players are young and have tremendous upside/resale value and their wages fit under our wage cap. We HAVE the $$$$ – so what’s the problem????? This is the question we should be asking. But I think we all know that answer:

NO MATTER how much $$$$ we make from player sales, winning UCL, new stadium revenue, sponsorships etc…we will NEVER NEVER spend large amounts of money (over 20-30M – which is nothing nowadays) on ANY PLAYER. Why??? Because that would eat into our owners PROFIT! This is the REDBIRD WAY.

So YEA – Mike, Leao and Theo will absolutely be sold if not this season def next season. The “project” M&M built is gone. PROFIT over TITLES gentlemen. About time we get used to it. This is the REDBIRD WAY. If you don’t believe me just watch the li k below and listen to Gerry the man himself:
