MN: Milan’s 2021-22 line-up to start from five certainties in defence

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are assembling their squad for next season but they already have an excellent foundation from which they can build.

MilanNews writes how for Milan the base for the squad is represented by a series of players but also by an entire department – namely the defence – which in addition to the Bennacer-Kessiè double pivot will have to show that their five clean sheets to end the 2020-21 season were no fluke.

Milan’s back line consists of three talented and reliable young players led by a leader of great character and experience. At right-back is Davide Calabria who came through the Primavera, on the opposite flank is Theo Hernandez who arrived in what now looks like a bargain deal, while Simon Kjaer is the leader in the middle and Fikayo Tomori is an exciting talent the club have invested in.

and Theo not only proved to be a cornerstone of the Rossoneri season but also proved a perfect balance. The irrepressible and unstoppable explosiveness of Theo Hernandez on the left, in fact, is balanced by Calabria’s obsessive attention to defensive detail. At the same time, the boldness and spectacularity of Tomori’s interventions find a balance in Kjaer’s silent and effective closures. So different, so similar for a series of differences and similarities that make the Rossoneri defense balanced and reliable.

The latest piece in the defensive puzzle with regards to the starting XI is Mike Maignan, who joined from Lille. The Frenchman will have to adapt to the communication of the department, who are all familiar with each other, but the foundations are there for the squad to prosper thanks to an excellent rearguard.
