MN: Monza presents Fonseca with ‘last chance’ to ‘experiment’ – the details

By Ben Dixon -

Pre-season offers football clubs the chance to experiment with tactics and players, and Paulo Fonseca has taken his chance to experiment on a few occasions, and when AC Milan play Monza, he could experiment once more.

With the Serie A season beginning next weekend, the fixture against Monza will allow Fonseca to make some last minute tweaks to his system now that he has a full squad available to him with Rafael Leao, Mike Maignan, and Tijjani Reijnders returning this week.

Additionally, Alvaro Morata and Strahinja Pavlovic could make their debuts, after they began training this week.

This summer, Milan have have not seen any wholesale changes, and Stefano Pioli’s system has been refined to match Fonseca’s ideas, making the transition simpler. However, there could be some last minute tweaks made, for example, with Theo and Leao returning there could be some ideas specifically for them.

According to Milan News‘ report, with a midfielder yet to arrive, Ruben Loftus-Cheek will probably start in the deeper role once again, allowing Pulisic to start as the Trequartista. Perhaps, they will be spearheaded by Morata, who could make the pressing system tick.

In defence, aside from Matteo Gabbia, there have been no standouts so far, so Pavlovic could immediately cause a positive impact. Theo should come straight into the side, and there could be an in-game experiment with Pierre Kalulu and Davide Calabria.

Finally, the report suggests that Maignan and Lorenzo Torriani could both have a chance to impress, with the 19-year-old set to be the Frenchman’s deputy.

  1. Hope we try Calabria as LB and Kalulu as RB, this might solve a lot of our issues. Potentially making Calabria Henderson-esque captain, coming in for stoping enemy winger, being completely defensive fullback
