Pioli explains decision to start Maldini over Diaz: “They are the reference points”

By Isak Möller -

Ahead of the game between AC Milan and Spezia, which is less than 15 minutes away, Stefano Pioli spoke to the media. The Rossoneri, currently at 13 points, will be looking to continue their unbeaten run.

In addition to remaining unbeaten, Milan also want revenge as they lost this fixture by two goals to nil last season. One will have to hope that they are better equipped this time out, while it should be mentioned that Spezia have also switched managers.

In an interview with DAZN, as cited by MilanNews, Pioli shared his thoughts on opting for Daniel Maldini rather than Brahim Diaz. The youngster will make his first league start for the club, 4500 days after Paolo made his last for the Rossoneri.

“Maldini starting? The choice stems from the fact that from the beginning of the season, Brahim and he are the reference points in that area of the pitch. Not choosing Brahim, I chose Daniel to fill that position,” he stated.

As said, Milan are currently unbeaten and a win today would do them good ahead of the Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday evening. It won’t be a walk in the park, though, as we also saw mid-week against Venezia.

  1. I’ll never seen Maldini have a good game! The player is below average for Milan standards. If he was good enough there will be loads of smaller clubs looking to take him on loan.

    1. Dude is 19 yrs old. Milan have managed him properly. He will learn slowly..Tonali was average last year but look at him now. I have learnt to trust the coach.
