Pioli says Milan ‘really missed’ Origi and breaks down Monza win – video

After the game between AC Milan and Monza, Stefano Pioli spoke to the club’s official channel about various topics. He was happy with the big win, but also admitted that the Rossoneri could have controlled the clash even better.

It was a well-timed confidence boost for Milan, who despite resting a lot of players clinched the three points with relative ease. And on Tuesday, they will take on Dinamo Zagreb in a decisive clash in the Champions League.

Speaking to MilanTV (see video with subtitles below), Pioli shared his thoughts on various topics.

On the game…

“It wasn’t an easy game, we faced a team that were aggressive without the ball but also tried to cause problems with it. We had to work hard and we did so with the usual team spirit and hunger.

On scoring early…

“We have certain characteristics that helped us score early. There are two key aspects: a good mentality that helps you grow into it and get hold of the game. And then, it changed the game tactically because your opponents, rather than sitting deep, have to take more risks.”

On the second half…

“In the second half I didn’t like it as much, they [Monza] were outnumbered in the midfield and we should’ve controllers possessions a bit better. This would’ve given us a better grip on the game. Sometimes we also need to slow down and recover in possession. We could have managed it better.

On competition…

“If you play for a top club, and Milan is a top club, you have to accept that there is competition and you need to give your all to convince your manager that you are better than your teammates. You shouldn’t get disheartened when you’re not starting.”

On Origi…

“I think Divock is a great striker, he’s a complete forward because he can do it all. We really missed him because Oli [Giroud] had to play a lot, which is tiring. Divock moves well, he can drift wide or get in behind, but he’s also got the physicality to hold up the ball and win duels.”
