Pioli on Tonali’s chances of starting: “Either you eat, or you are eaten”

By Isak Möller -

Sandro Tonali signed for Milan ahead of this season, joining on an initial loan deal from Brescia. The young midfielder has been touted as one of the most promising Italian players, inevitably raising expectations.

Joining a club like the Rossoneri is never easy for any player, let alone a 20-year-old that has played just one season in Serie A. Therefore, it’s necessary to remember that Tonali has only just arrived, as well as the fact that he’s still very young.

As a result of Ismael Bennacer’s injury, the midfielder has got a lot of playing time in the last few months, partnering up with Franck Kessie in the midfield tandem. In his press conference today, Stefano Pioli was asked about the youngster (via MilanNews).

Could Tonali lose his spot with Bennacer’s return?

“As Zlatan says at these levels, ‘either you eat or you are eaten’”

But as already said, Tonali still has time to adapt and improve his performances with Milan. In a sense, the return of Bennacer could give him a breather, but eventually it will be a battle for the starting spots.

  1. He’s young. You don’t lose your ability overnight; maybe he needs to go out on a season’s loan next year. Pazienza….

  2. He was never fantastic at Brescia last season. In the game vs Milan, nothing really stood out and Kessie had him in his pockets. More hype than anything but he is young and has loads of time to grow if he were at a small to medium sized club. At Milan I doubt if he’d be given the time to develop properly without the added pressure that comes with the jersey.
