Pioli praises ‘excellent’ Frosinone and explains Hernandez at centre-back

By Isak Möller -

Ahead of the clash between AC Milan and Frosinone, Stefano Pioli spoke to the media and shared his thoughts on the Rossoneri’s situation. Among other things, he discussed starting Theo Hernandez as a centre-back.

Milan lost their mid-week game against Borussia Dortmund by three goals to one, complicating their path to the Champions League Round of 16. Tonight, they could make it two consecutive wins domestically but it’s clear that more is needed to fully restore the confidence.

Speaking to DAZN ahead of tonight’s encounter with Frosinone, as cited by MilanNews, Pioli explained the decision to field Hernandez as a centre-back. He also shared his thoughts on the game as a whole, as well as Luka Jovic’s chance to shine.

On the defence…

“Theo can play in that role. He will also give us a good hand in the build-up. We have to be organised on the pitch. Playing a youngster from start would have been risky.”

On Frosinone…

“They are playing excellent football, they will play with confidence. We have to win the second match in a row after Fiorentina, it hasn’t happened in the league for a long time. We have to give everything and play with clarity.”

On Jovic…

“He arrived in poor condition, now he’s well and can demonstrate his qualities.”

A win would take them within three points of Inter, who are in second place and will face Napoli tomorrow. It remains to be seen how Milan will cope with the many injury absences for the night, especially considering the makeshift backline.

    1. Utilize youngsters from primavera can rest players like theo leao bennacer Calabria tomori thiaw giroud so they wouldn’t get injured so easily

    2. There is a difference between not giving his chance to Thiaw or Vranckx or Adli who are in the first team roster and not giving his chance to a Primavera kid.

There is an abysmal difference in level between Primavera and pro football. I’m not a fan of Pioli but not everything he does is lousy or he wouldn’t have won a scudetto. He watched Simic practice all week long and decided that he was not ready to play in a crucial game (considering Pioli risks his job these days). Kids make rookie mistakes and as a central defender you have to be perfect. Pioli prefers to rely on guys who are professional players for years, I totally agree with Pioli here.

This. Should be obvious to anyone but clearly it isn’t…

  1. Playing a Youngster from the start would be risky
But what about putting a player that never played in that position isn’t risky? Also utilize youngsters when the team needs them provide big help and big chance to show you what they got. Also most of the teams in Italy brought up youngsters more than you have . Yildiz Sam illing junior faglioli miretti this team is 1st in the league rn inter brought youmgsters Roma Atalanta. Why u hesitate?
Simic wanted by bvb Newcastle eletu wanted by as monaco zeroli wanted by bvb Newcastle
Camarda wanted by bvb Newcastle man city psg why you hesitate? PLEASE LEAVE PIOLI

    1. Exactly we all know Theo isn’t defensive minded like his brother. If it’s that risky, play a more compact tactic where CDM can support him alongside Tomori.
Idk why management kept him last season if it wasn’t for point deduction he’d miss his target. Please Pioli leave

  2. I know he is the coach, but someone from management has to step in and stop this madness.

He moved three defenders from their natural positions instead of fielding in Simic, to make pne adjustment ….Pioli is an absolute clown of a coach.

  3. Foolish. Theo is our best attacking defender and worst at defending. Then your going to bring Simic into a game with little minutes when it will probably be a tight game.

  4. Theo is looking fine at CB. I’m not a fan of Pioli, but you guys see everything through your hate-only lens. It’s not difficult to understand why he played a professional footballer instead of Simic.

If he put Simic in and he got torn apart, would you guys all post about how you were wrong? I can’t picture it.

Wait until things play out until you judge them. Your subjectivity is blinding you.

  5. Playing youngster from start could be risky, but put him from bench also could be risky 😂😂😂 The guy is talking as if florenzi or calabria never made a mistake 🤣
