Pioli smiles as Rebic brings back healthy competition to the left-wing position

By Isak Möller -

Ante Rebic, who had a disappointing 2021/22 season, has started the pre-season in the best way possible with two strong performances. Although a lot can still happen, Stefano Pioli knows this could benefit AC Milan a lot.

This past season, it was mainly Rafael Leao that had to do the work on the left flank and he did that tremendously well. However, on more than one occasion, the fatigue became apparent and Milan could have used Rebic in good form then.

As highlighted by our colleagues at SempreMilan.it, Pioli is very happy about the way Rebic has started this pre-season as he wants that healthy competition on the left. In fact, it could actually offload some pressure off Leao’s shoulders.

The pecking order is open as far as the manager is concerned. He doesn’t want to use the Scudetto season as an excuse for his selections: this is a new season and the players will have to show that they are up for it. Rebic’s revival, therefore, comes with perfect timing.

  1. Rebic is a good player, above all a player with a lot of grit and determination. I hope he manages to stay fit throughout the season, he’ll be very important for us.

    1. If the right offer had arrived or were to arrive i would be willing to listen to the offer if its good enough but having an inform rebic back compared to the form of last season would be like a new signing that would improve the squad regardless if it sounds like an empty phrase. When that is said i agree he is a player with a lot of grit and determination but he is also a player that i believe who has a hard time being a backup which both can be a positive and negative in regard of keeping him.
Either way keeping him wouldnt be an issue for me as he can contrbute greatly when in form and certainly would also push leao to perform at his very best.

      1. agree, being a back up or substitution is difficult especially looking in the rearview mirror with the season he had two years ago, I do not think he would be or was upset coming in at the 60 minute mark, but Pioli for the most part had him entering the game with less than 10 minutes left. He felt unimportant, and that is demoralizing, but even with that said when he did enter a game early or late he made an impact and was a threat defensively and offensively.

  2. I don’t know what pioli is thinking, salamaekers will not have a problem being leao back up, so why not put rebic at the right…..is it rebic who is insisting he will play at the right? Because even when we had both rebic and leao in the game, it is always leao who goes to the right….does that mean pioli do not have the power to try rebic at the right? Or is rebic allowed to say where he wants to play? Even if it is obvious that we need both of them in our matches.

Pioli need to force rebic to play at the right….
Leao Origi Rebic and Adli behind them is going to be lethal

  3. Rebic is strong with his back to goal, good with both feet, has great vision and way more defensive than Leao, with full understanding that Leao is more lethal on the attack. Toward the end of the year as he got more playing time as Leao tired, he was pivotal in a couple victories when he stole the ball back on the counter attack, Lazio ? comes to mind. Personally I would like (and I have harped on this to Steffon, lol) to try him at the 10, he played there at Eintracht. He will never get pushed off the ball like Diaz and is tall enough to see the lanes, maybe not all games depending on the opposition, but he is too valuable to be on bench for 70-80 minutes, he goes in and the opposition center and full backs have a tough time getting by him.

  4. I like Rebic. He is just the right person when you need to add some brute force which happens a lot in Serie A. He is also a great zebra hunter lol. Also, did well against our first Liverpool clash. It is important to have a player who never loses his confidence in front of big clubs.
And worth mentioning his ability to play as a CF or even AF. This guy is someone you can rely on.
Also, Rebic, Bennacer and Florenzi are our only guys who can shoot a stunner from a long range.

  5. Rebic last season started very well as the only constructive forward, played number 9 a couple of matches, against Juventus and against liverpool first outing and he was a huge quality and amazing, it’s quite unfortunate that after the wrist injury he fell off the pecking order because Leao was in top form, same situation is already on display between Kalulu and Simon Kjaer
