GdS: Pioli studying the team to face Salernitana – two question marks to be resolved

By Oliver Fisher -

The AC Milan squad are back in training today and Stefano Pioli has already begun thinking about the line-up he will field for the game against Salernitana.

La Gazzetta dello Sport write how Divock Origi’s ‘cursed season’ continues as he suffered a muscle problem while in Dubai but there was good news as Alexis Saelemaekers and Davide Calabria have both returned.

The game against Salernitana should see the ‘first choice’ defence together again with Calabria assisted by Fikayo Tomori and Pierre Kalulu as the centre-backs and Theo Hernandez at left-back. Sandro Tonali and Ismael Bennacer are tipped to be the double pivot, with Alexis Saelemaekers and Rafael Leao expected to be on the flanks.

The first question mark is the centre-forward role, with three options: Giroud, Ante Rebic or De Ketelaere as a false nine. The Frenchman will return to training on the 30th, without taking part in the friendly match against PSV Eindhoven, so Pioli will evaluate his condition nearer the time without underestimating the fact that Roma will arrive at the San Siro four days later.

De Ketelaere as a false nine is a solution that Pioli admitted he is considering, but if Giroud were fit enough then he would start behind the 36-year-old in the playmaker role, or Brahim Diaz could take that spot.
