Raimondo: Furlani’s €30m cap and the Technical Committee – how Milan’s management operates

The question is often asked regarding how AC Milan’s hierarchy actually works in practice, and more specifically what powers each member of the management has.

This applies above all to the CEO Giorgio Furlani, considering that there have been some media reports suggesting that he has the final say on the targets technical director Geoffrey Moncada picks out, while others believe Gerry Cardinale has the signing-off powers.

According to Felice Raimondo, the Chamber of Commerce records show Furlani can now move freely for each single-signature operation (i.e. independently) up to €30m gross, which is even greater freedom than his predecessor Ivan Gazidis.

These operations include agreements with sports agents and player salaries for their entire duration. That means, putting some figures in, that Furlani can sign-off the renewal of a player worth €3m net per season without Growth Decree (approximately €6m gross) for a five-year contract (6×5=30) in complete autonomy.

For operations between €30m and €100m gross, however, the joint signature of Furlani and the owner Cardinale is required plus the positive opinion of the Technical Committee, which also includes Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Moncada.

For example, Morata – who according to the media signed a contract worth €4.5m net, cost approximately €9m gross for four years which equals a potential salary commitment of €36m.

Thus, signing arrival can be considered a collective responsibility given that it was finalised with a double signature plus the positive opinion of the Technical Committee.

In terms of what the actual budget is, the management all move within the margins set each year by the Board of Directors (what is improperly called budget), and the figures are rightly unknown to the public.

        1. why the insults for God’s sake.
so you think @KOKO said the right thing?
To me too Milan Management are doing great job. spend a reasonable budget, the brand is growing day by day, we just recovered from almost bankrupcy less than a decade….plus they are working on our own stadium whilst we achieving an above average and decent results on the field

  1. Atalanta within days signs Scamacca’s replacement.

Meanwhile, Milan takes weeks of haggling just for deals to fall through.

    1. Literally my thought 2 minutes ago when I just saw a picture of retugui. Yesterday scammacca acl news broke, today striker replaced, an Italy international no less. He’s not the man for us but they still threw 22m at it. It’s still a 10m profit for a season with Genoa. We seem so incapable.

      1. and you think Atalanta made decision just 48 hours to sign Retegui?
you guys should go check, Atalanta has been in talks concerning Retegui but hasten it due to the scamaca injury

  2. Funny how Atalanta can strike a deal for 25 millions for Retegui in just a matter of days but we, who are financially most sound club in Serie A, a fastest growing football brand globally, a club that has a healthy budget and does not need to sell, we lowball and make a mockery out of ourselves and everyone we’re negotiating with.

How on earth is anybody still buying the cr*p from these Wall Street hee-haws is beyond me.

    1. Wait, I thought they were from Texas in a previous rant? 🙂

I watched Retigui carefully in the Euros and found him a bit like Adli. Great attitude and effort but lacking impact.

So I think I would have been moaning if we dropped 25m on him.

There is also the notion that you become and remain financially viable by not panic purchasing on a foreseeable event.

      1. How is Retegui now the point of my comment? I am talking about deals done, where clubs like Atalanta, Roma, Fiorentina are reinforcing and spending but Milan who are all that and more as media are potraying us, cannot cough up enough for a defensive midfielder who we desperately need.

We’re 10 days from season’s start and they’re putting all their efforts in wasting money on a deadwood where we are pretty much covered.

        1. We’re Scrooge McDuck basically. Cheap and economic. Still always on the lookout for treasures with the help from our weird friends. Now we can put our nephews in Milan futuro also.

        2. this is how they always go buy everytime and end of season Milan is always ahead of them….do you agree with me on this?

    2. Atalanta has sold 56M worth of players this summer, isn’t going to put CDK (23M) on the books until the next fiscal year, and is projected to sell Koopmeiners for 65M (SIXTY FIVE MILLION). This is where they get the money. Simple.

Meanwhile, Milan has sold no starters, has not sold all of its top primavera talent (unlike Juventus), did not make 63M and 71M NET income the last two summers respectively (Roma did, for those yapping about how Roma is spending), all the while trying to sign a CB, CM and ST of a certain caliber that at fair market value ought to each be around 30-50M.

People wanted Zirkzee, who cost 42M, they want Fofana who would cost 50M if he had two or more years on his contract remaining, and wanted Buongiorno who cost 35M. That’s ~127M for three players. Where is the money tree or who do we sell? Leao? Theo?

      1. I don’t understand why everyone thinks we or Atalanta for that matter would show the transaction for CDK in the next financial year. I think ppl are mixing up calendar year with financial year. Milan’s (and I’m going to assume most clubs in Serie A) financial year ends in June of each year and starts in July. So CDK money will be recorded for this financial year (24/25) not next year (25/26). We can actually spend the money we made from him if we budget to receive it. We don’t have to wait for the actual money to arrive to spend 🤷‍♂️
At least that’s what I know of for budgets

        1. I think your general analysis is correct, but I remember reading that Atalanta will pay us in February. If the fiscal years run July 1 to June 30, then I’m not sure why they would do this other than it implies maybe their fiscal year actually doesn’t. But in any event, let’s assume that CDK’s 23M do count towards our budget this season (July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025). Does it materially change the calculus? It doesn’t really shift the needle. Just subtract 23M from my original number, which by the way is adjusted to at least ~157M, if we’re buying a “good” RB at around 30M. Throw in CDK money and we were still spending ~134M on four players: ST 42M + CM 50M + CB 35M + RB 30M – CDK 23M.

We’ve spent ~36M and we’ve only taken in ~28M, meaning we’re down ~8M, with another 15M to be spent on Royal and 20M on Fofana. So we’ll be -43M. If we bought the “kind” of players that people want us to buy for those two positions we’d be spending at least 30M and 50M. So we’d be down a further 45M.

We don’t play in the PL and we’re not PSG. Our comparables are other Serie A clubs, and I’ve already postulated as to how they’re spending as much as they are this season.

Again, find me that money tree or sell Leao or Theo if this is the transfer campaign people expect. But then don’t complain about being a “selling club”.

          1. Accounting 101. CDK counts for this fiscal year.

Outside of paying a release clause, we’ve had one deal with another team for a new player.

We also sold Simic. We sold Maldini (wages gone), loaned Colombo (wages gone), not to mention high earners like Caldara and Kjaer are gone. We spent 36 total yes, but then receive 24 for CDK, 3 for Simic. Now, Brescianno is about to be sold to Napoli for 12, so we get 6 of that. So, do the math, we are at -3. If we buy Emerson for 15, we are at -18. That’s it.

$18 million spent all summer and you Cardinale Cucks are acting like we are spending like Chelsea. If we paid say 30 (as an extreme) for Fofana, we’d be at -48. Not even 50 mill spent and we could still potentially sell Adli and/or Pobega.

          2. @Kaka

Do whatever math you’d like. -48 is a 48 million dollar loss. It’s a loss. Organizations go bankrupt when they lose money. Accounting 101. Cuck.

          3. Folks we’re actually in a net positive cash revenue so far this summer. Don’t know about timing – how much of it falls into profit of last fiscal year ending June 30 2024 or into this subsequent year, but there is an analysis in another article that shows we already got rid of 36M and only spent maybe 30M on Morata, Pavlovic, & Jimenez. That’s 6M in amortization of fees & gross salary. We should have plenty of Budget (and especially ffp allowance of 60-80M) to close deals like Pavlovic (finally) & Fofana quicker. This lack of preseason is “costing” us more than we’re saving

          4. @Vero

So we shouldn’t spend any money to improve the squad? That’s what you’re saying. You sure are dense. Meanwhile, Inter, Juve, even Roma added pieces.

But, let’s just sit here and be cheap and not make any investments.

          5. Last I checked we are NOT a getting ANY of the players you mentioned – Zirkzee, Bongornio, OR Fofana – so unfortunately you are just making up numbers mate. Fofana 50M IF he has 2 years left? Well he doesn’t so that is just a made up number.

So to simplify things it’s kinda like this so far:

we signed Morata (13) and Pavlovic (20) – that is all. That is 33M. CDK money (22M) plus Simic (3) – 33 minus 25 = 8M net spend so far.

Add Emerson and that is another 15M – plus 8M is 23M NET spend.

A player like a Fofana, Rios, Koné, etc…- because we won’t spend over 20M on ANY player) – at 20M would be 43M net spend.

That doesn’t include ANY sales yet (Salad, Adli, Pobega, etc…) – so if we sell Salad (10) – the NET spend is approximately 33M. Our yearly TRANSFER budget is 35M.

An Abraham LOAN may cost a few million – or we will sell one of the above players (Adli, Pobega) to offset of its more than that

And this is Redbird. 35M NET TRANSFER SPEND is what we basically have no matter how much profit they make.

          6. Ok u went further than what I expected about the breakdowns lol 😂 but point taken about the fiscal years which was my focus. I’m not entirely sure either how they’re doing their calculations. So even if the money for CDK is there or allocated it also doesn’t mean we want to spend it or we can defer it to next year and be in a strong position then too or make the financials look good for investors.
On the Atalanta FY not sure they start on a schedule different from ours. I believe the money comes in around Jan/Feb as the deal was a loan with obligation. And I believe the minimum loan period was 6 months from around now-ish. Could be wrong though but that’s what I gathered initially.
Other than that I’m not sure about what our budget really and truly is like. I’m just hoping we get proper players (DM being the most important) and not to waste money on players that will bloat the squad

      2. If you’re looking for a job in finance this ain’t the place bro, plus all those clubs you mentioned have considerably less revenue than Milan.

  3. What a lot of BS ….others move on, milan acts like a dumb idiot.. there is only one solution ….. dump milan … why the hell should i care any more!!!

  4. I rarely comment here, although i read all comments and articles. But i have to jump in this time, i have some spare emojis i would like to leave here: 🤡🤡🤡

  5. I’d like the management to be a little more decisive for sure, the extra mills spent would rather give them more comfort with the fans that generate the revenue. However, if they manage to close the contracts they wanted, it’s not a big deal in terms of missing pre-season. Fofana, if signed even a month ago, would have joined Theo and Mike this week on Milanelo, but wouldn’t have seen the rest of the squad yet. Same goes for most of the mentioned targets by the newspapers.

Most of the people didn’t like Fonseca as a coach choice, but so far we liked what we saw from the pre-season matches. We oversimplify the whole process but it is important what offers we get for existing players that we consider sellable, what are Fonseca’s strategy and his assessment on the whole mid-section. We see players are tested in various positions, we also have to leave a bit of a room in the squad for the Futuro players. What I mean with all that is – there’s reason for frustration from our end (especially with Fofana, I wouldn’t put blame on the Zirkzee case), but also we have a new coach and a pre-season cut in half because of the Euros. My best guess is they delayed/skipped some deals just to give Fonseca a bit more time to assess the current squad.
