Romagnoli hits out at Spain over controversial decision in FIFA tournament

By Isak Möller -

As was confirmed by FIFA yesterday, there will be no eNations StayAndPlay Cup. The tournament between national teams, consisting of a professional and an amateur from each country, was cancelled at the last minute.

The FIFA 20 tournament was due to start today but was cancelled just last night. Of course, many are disappointed and puzzled as, coincidentally, the decision arrived after Adriano Galliani (Italy’s team manager) criticised the organizers.

Instead of a professional player, as reported by ANSA (via MilanNews.it), Spain decided to add an esports player for the ‘celebrity role’: djmariio, who is among the top 30 FIFA 20 players in the world.

Galliani even threatened to file an official complaint to Zurich yesterday afternoon. In their statement, FIFA wrote that there were ‘technical problems related to the Coronavirus’, justifying the cancellation of the tournament.

However, they then invited the registered teams to play against each other, but in friendly matches instead. Alessio Romagnoli, who paired with “Er_caccia98” Cacciapuoti, made it clear that he won’t play and criticised the Spaniards.

“I didn’t like the move of the Spaniards who, instead of putting a professional player in the team, they added a YouTuber who plays as a real eSports player. They wanted to do the combined double, and then I don’t play.

“If FIFA host a tournament, ask me for my availability, and I organize this between my family and professional life, they can’t come the night before the event and say that it’s a friendly match,” he concluded.
