The worrying stats behind Suso’s start to the season

By Oliver Fisher -

It would be fair to say that AC Milan winger Suso has not had the best of starts to the 2019-20 Serie A season thus far.

The Spaniard has struggled to find form to start the season, amassing no goals and just one assist through the first eight rounds of Serie A action.

The appointment of Stefano Pioli as the club’s new head coach was expected to help Suso from a tactical standpoint, as he has been shifted to his more natural position out wide on the right side.

However, he was not at all impressive in Sunday night’s 2-2 draw against Lecce, failing to contribute in the final third and also completely ignoring his defensive responsibilities which left Milan’s right flank exposed. He was also booed when his name was announced before kick-off.

Milan fans then once again caused a stir on social media as the hashtag ‘#SusoOut’ began trending in Italy on Monday.

As the Twitter account @PdiCalcio has revealed, Suso is the player who has had the most failed dribble attempts (11), the player who lost the most balls (32) and has the least tackles (2/7) in the first eight rounds of the season for Milan.

A marked improvement is needed from the former Liverpool man, especially amid reports that the club are losing patience and will consider selling him in January.
