Watch: Pioli explains second-half struggles against Spezia and defends Giroud

By Isak Möller -

Stefano Pioli was interviewed by Milan’s official channel, MilanTV, after the important win against Spezia last night. He admitted that the Rossoneri must improve and he also shared his thoughts on Olivier Giroud’s red card.

Giroud came off the bench in the second half and ended up scoring the winner in the 89th minute. It was a very acrobatic finish from the experienced player dn in all the emotion, he took off his shirt and got his second yellow.

Speaking to MilanTV (see the full video with subtitles below), Pioli shared his thoughts on a few topics…

On the game…

“We made life difficult by not scoring another goal in the first half, because we had the chances to do so. We looked deflated after conceding the goal, which shouldn’t happen because we are a team with a clear philosophy. We tried to play it long too much. However, as always, they showed amazing character. It’s a massive win.”

On Giroud’s red card…

“I think we have totally bought into the aims we have set up, we’re all so hungry and I understand why Oli [Giroud] might have got carried away there. It happens. It’s the emotion you feel after a late winner, but such an experienced player should have known he was booked already.”

On killing games earlier…

“This should be our aim, our motivation. We still have a lot of things to improve. One of our aims is to dominate the games a bit more, without suffering and having to push until the end. But it also takes work, I like how my team approached the game, even if we should have done better in the second half.”
