AC Milan’s honorary vice president Franco Baresi has given a long interview to Milan TV about his new role and about the current state of the team.

It was confirmed after the recent shareholders’ meeting that Baresi would take up the new position, which gives him greater responsibility than before when he was just a club ambassador.

Baresi spoke to Milan TV about a number of different topics, with his words transcribed by MilanNews and translated below.

On his appointment as vice president: “First of all I want to thank the club for this new position. With their banner, the fans surprised me. Despite the passage of time, there is always a great bond with them. I always get excited about certain acts of esteem. Even the flag with my number six displayed at the stadium is another demonstration of affection for me.”

On the new role: “I have been lucky enough to live at the club for many years and to know the various dynamics that exist in a football club. I will give my contribution to try to achieve our goals.”

On the Milan Foundation: “Being part of the Board of Directors is an important thing for me, we want to carry out many new projects to help those who are less fortunate.”

On the new stadium: “It is an important opportunity for Milan and for the two clubs. The owned stadium will bring significant revenues, so it would be an important thing to build a new facility.”

On the rumours that he could run for Mayor from Milan: “I felt like smiling when I heard them, anyone who knows me knows it’s not something for me. I don’t know why my name came out. Milan is my city and therefore I hope it can grow more and more.”

On the fans: “It is important to involve them and keep a close relationship with them. We have many fans around the world, so social networks are essential to have a relationship with them who are further away. The fans are very important for the team and for Milan because they always convey great enthusiasm and passion.”

On the team: “The team has understood that it can be a protagonist, now they have the conviction that they can play against anyone. After the lockdown the team has grown a lot and has found a continuity of results. The players have a great desire to amaze, they are getting great satisfaction.”

On Donnarumma: “Despite his young age, he already has great experience and personality. He is one of the best goalkeepers in the world. For us he is a great source of pride because he grew up in Milan. He has all the qualities to become an important point of reference for us.”

On Tonali: “He is very young, he arrived at a great club and one that immediately demands a lot. He has already shown his qualities last season, he is a young prospect, he needs patience. Little by little he will get to know the mentality of Milan better and he will also become a protagonist.”

On Calabria: “He has always had some ups and downs. He is a product of our academy, now he has found the right balance. He is providing great performances, he is repaying the trust that the club has shown him.”

On set pieces: “In my day they had several tall, strong headed players. It takes courage and attention to not give your opponents opportunities to score goals.”

On the recent derby win: “Winning the derby is always nice, it helps you to increase the belief that you are doing something good.”

On Pioli: “I always see him calm and attentive. His path as a coach is growing. He is proving to be an intelligent and good coach on the human aspect. He was good at finding the right form and stimulating all the players who now they are able to express themselves better. So it should be given credit to Pioli too.”
