AC Milan have been working on the stadium project for several years now, along with Inter, and they are yet to receive the final go-ahead for it. Gerry Cardinale, the new owner, is getting impatient on this front.
Milan and Inter first announced their plans for a new stadium back in 2019, but the road since has been filled with bureaucratic hurdles for the clubs. There now seems to be some light at the end of the tunnel, but a location hasn’t been decided yet.
The project that Milan and Inter have presented for the city council concerns the San Siro area, where they currently play at Giuseppe Meazza. A revised plan was presented a few weeks back and it was approved by the council, with an increased focus on greenery around the new stadium.
However, the two clubs are not out of the woods yet as the matter is now subject to a public debate. On September 29, next week that is, the debate will begin and it will be carried out by Avventura Urbana Srl. A final answer is expected around the end of November.
Should the public decide that a new stadium is for the best, then it won’t take long for Milan and Inter to get the final go-ahead they’ve always wanted. However, the outcome is far from certain and there could also be further delays with regard to the schedule, which Cardinale isn’t a fan of.
TeleLombardia broke the news earlier this week, stating that the American entrepreneur doesn’t fully trust the process with regard to San Siro, seeing as there have been so many delays previously. The alternative is to build a stadium in the Sesto San Giovanni area.
The Sesto major has always welcomed the project and Milan would be able to build a bigger stadium there, and also without Inter. The area is privately owned by the Hines fund and Cardinale has already been in talks with them. In short, he wants to get the green light as soon as possible, but it could still end up being San Siro.
As boring as it sounds, Milan will simply have to wait for the outcome of the public debate, which shouldn’t take that long. The process afterwards is what Cardinale will monitor closely, always with an eye on Sesto, especially if the public were to decide that a new stadium isn’t the way to go.
If you want to read more about the project for the San Siro area, you can do so here. The revenue will obviously increase significantly, even if the stadium project is a hefty investment at €1.2bn.
It’s weird how easy Juventus build their own stadium. But Milan needs to get through all these BS process and still there’s a possibility they will not get the greenlight :/
