Fassone: “Something wasn’t working; Gattuso is not a ferryman”

By Claudio Perfetto -

As was confirmed earlier today, Vincenzo Montella is no longer the manager manager of AC Milan. Taking his place will be Gennaro Gattuso, former Milan great and manager of the primavera team.

Milan CEO, Marco Fassone, spoke about the change to TV8 during the Gala del calcio awards. Here are his statements:

On the decision to sack Montella: “I am not sure if maybe it was an inevitable decision, we thought it was the right move in light of what has happened over the last few weeks.”

On Gattuso: “He is not a ferryman, he is the best choice in this situation, he knows what his role is and has accepted it with humility. He knows that in his hands now he has the first team of Milan, something truly great. ”

On the decision: “In the past weeks it is something we evaluated, but not during the summer. The directors did their evaluation and the final choice was made this morning, I made some reflections during the night and spoke to ownership this morning.”

On his rapport with Montella: “I thank him from a professional and personal point of view, he did all he could to get the best out of the roster. Something wasn’t working, there were errors on everyone’s part. The most important thing is to make this decision now and not to just keep thinking things are going to improve.”

On the January transfer market: “We don’t have the necessity to intervene. The squad is good, built with the ambitions not to win the league, but to make the Champions League. We can be better than what we’ve shown so far. We do not even have a point and a half on average from our matches, we hoped it would be different. We are convinced that with Gattuso the average will jump up, and we will return to believing in the objectives we had set out at the beginning of the season.”
