Montella: “My players know what it means to play for Milan”

By Oliver Fisher -

Vincenzo Montella believes his AC Milan players know what it takes to bring success to the club.

Milan ran out 5-0 winners in Switzerland after dispatching FC Chiasso with a clinical first-half display.

Goals from Andrea Poli, M’Baye Niang, Luiz Adriano and a brace from Gianluca Lapadula put Milan 5-0 up after just 28 minutes in Saturday’s friendly, and Montella was happy with the run out.

“The boys played with the right mentality and I want to compliment myself with them because it’s not easy to do so in a friendly match.

“They have showed they understand what it means to play for AC Milan even against smaller clubs, and how much they wanted to win this match.”

The Rossoneri head coach commented on the serious injury sustained by captain Riccardo Montolivo, and what it means for the team moving forward.

“Riccardo is a key player for us and we will miss him a lot. I want to wish him the best of luck and I am sure he will be back even stronger.

“We were of course very sad when we heard the news, it’s not going to be easy to play without him.”

“We have been trying Sosa in Montolivo’s role and he can do well. It all depends on how long it will take him to adapt to it.

“Locatelli is still very young and we must not be hasty. We’ll see when he comes back from the National team.”

Montella previewed the Diavolo‘s upcoming league clash in Verona against Chievo.

“The clash against Chievo is not going to be easy, they have experienced players and play good football.”

The former Fiorentina boss was asked about the possibility of switching to a 4-2-3-1 formation.

“We don’t have the players to play with this gameplan, unfortunately this is a injury ravaged season for our midfield”

Leonel Vangioni is still waiting for his first minutes in Serie A, and Montella was happy to give the former River Plate man 90 minutes in the friendly win.

“It’s not easy to come from another country and adapt to Italian football, especially for a defender. Leonel played 90′ and this will do him good.”
