Montella: “We have to raise the tempo, but we can be satisfied”

By Oliver Fisher -

Vincenzo Montella was happy to get off to a winning start as AC Milan manager.

The rossoneri ran out 2-1 winners against Bordeaux in France thanks to two first half goals from Suso.

“I am certainly happy, as the lads showed their willingness to put the principles we worked on into practice. Fortunately, we can get a lot better,” Montella said in an interview with Sky Sport Italia.

“The lads interpreted the game well in terms of attitude too. We worked a lot with the ball in training, as the secret is in the quality and the predisposition of the players.

“It was our first match, we have to raise the tempo and especially the passing when we construct moves. But we are only at the start and there are some positive signs.”

The tactician was asked about Giacomo Bonaventura taking the kind of midfield role Borja Valero has at Fiorentina.

“He is more of a trequartista than an internal midfielder, but he has the characteristics to play more or less everywhere in midfield.

AC Milan travel to the United States to face Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Chelsea in the International Champions Cup at the end of the month.

“The most important thing is that the team is showing enthusiasm and really participating in the process. The side showed good spirit and gave a good impression. I think we can be satisfied.”
