Pioli explains why Leao didn’t feature vs. Atleti but assures: “He’s ready to play”

Rafael Leao was included in AC Milan’s squad for the game against Atletico Madrid mid-week. However, despite the Rossoneri needing a goal in the second half, the Portuguese youngster remained on the bench.

In the end, it went well anyway for Stefano Pioli’s side but the decision to leave Leao out wasn’t just tactical. During today’s press conference (via MilanNews), on the eve of the game against Sassuolo, the manager stated that Leao wasn’t ready.

“Leao is fine, he had not yet recovered from the cramps in Florence but tomorrow he’s ready to play,” he stated.

It will be nice to see the winger back from start tomorrow as he has been one of Milan’s best. There’s no doubt, though, that he has been overworked as a result of Ante Rebic’s injuries and the rest has surely done him a lot of good.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is expected to start up front and Leao will also be joined by Alexis Saelemaekers and Brahim Diaz in the attacking trio. Hopefully, they will take better care of their chances than against Fiorentina.
