SempreMilan’s Player of the Month for August: Trio of summer signings on the podium

By Ivan Stoev -

After an intense summer for the Milan in the transfer market, the team started the Serie A season with style by recording two wins.

The Rossoneri emerged victorious on the opening day against Sampdoria in a narrow 1-0 away win followed up by a 4-1 win at San Siro against Cagliari. Obviously, in August Milan only had two games and since they won both of them the majority of the players have had two very good games, but we’ve picked out the top three from the two games based on our player ratings…

3. Brahim Diaz – Average rating: 7.5

The Spaniard saw his loan extended this summer for another two years with an option to buy. With Calhanoglu’s departure formalised it was expected for Milan to go into the market looking for their starting No.10, but in the end that arrival didn’t come and Diaz is set to be the main man for Pioli this season.

It would be fair to say that Brahim has started the pre-season in near-perfect fashion and then proved a lot of doubters wrong with his outings against Sampdoria and Cagliari. The 22-year-old scored the only goal in the narrow 1-0 victory in the opening game and then picked up an assist in the game against Cagliari with an overall promising performance.

2. Olivier Giroud – Average rating: 7.5

The Frenchman came to be a second option for Pioli and with Zlatan Ibrahimovic having more and more muscle problems and it was pretty obvious from the start that he will pick up a lot of game time.

Giroud started pre-season very well and while the first game against Sampdoria was goalless for him he did manage a brace in the second round against Cagliari to secure the win for his team. A good two games for the 34-year-old as he looks to break the No.9 ‘curse’ and be an important part of this Milan side.

1. Sandro Tonali – Average rating: 7.5

The Italian has had a shaky but progressively better pre-season which followed up with a mixed first half against Sampdoria. From then onwards, however, Tonali has only improved and looks more and more confident and ready to have his breakthrough season in red and black.

He managed to score a lovely free kick to open the score against Cagliari and played an amazing game. The youngster seems to have settled and is working hard to prove the doubters wrong and leave his debut season behind.
