GdS: Milan’s injury crisis deepens in Empoli win – the latest from the treatment room

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan may have picked up three points against Empoli on Saturday night but it came at a cost as the injury crisis deepened, a report claims.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) report how Davide Calabria, Simon Kjaer and Alexis Saelemakers came off during the game. The first two will undergo some instrumental tests today to understand the extent of their physical problems, while the Belgian has a partial tear of the medial collateral ligament but will not need an operation.

Saelemaekers will have to stay out for about two months and therefore his 2022 is over. He will be back at the beginning of 2023, when the season will resume after the break for the World Cup in Qatar. It is likely that Calabria will not return before the start of the new year either.

There is a bit more optimism instead around Kjaer’s condition as the muscle problem in his flexor should not be as serious, but he is very unlikely to be available against Chelsea on Wednesday evening, but the hope is that he can recover for the subsequent home league match against Juventus.

Stefano Pioli hopes to be able to call upon Theo Hernandez again for the game against Juve, as he is continuing his recovery path from the adductor strain, while Divock Origi could be in the squad for the game in London.
